Objective
• to be able to plan a lesson effectively
• to be able to justify how and why you have planned a lesson in a particular way
Instructions
Part A Lesson plan (approximately1000 words)
Write a lesson plan for a 40-60 minute lesson. Choose a main aim for the lesson from ONE
of the following areas: grammar OR vocabulary OR pronunciation OR listening OR speaking
OR reading OR writing.
NOTE: the activities you choose MUST be different from the activities you have used for
assignments 1 & 2.
Use the lecture notes from Week 3 Lesson Planning to write your lesson plan.
Part B Rationale (approximately 1500 words)
Explain the reasons for the choices (e.g. aims, activities, procedure) in your lesson
plan. It needs to be clear why you have made these choices, and how these choices are linked
to theoretical principles in the literature. Make sure you use relevant literature to do this.
Part C Appendix (not included in word count)
At the back of the assignment, include copies of ALL the texts and activities used in your
lesson plan.
NOTE: the texts and activities can be taken from books or the internet, they can be adapted,
or they can be developed by you.
Advice
• In Part A, make sure the lesson aim(s), texts and activities you use are appropriate for
the learners you describe in your lesson plan.
• In Part A, describe the procedure so that every step of the lesson is very clear.
• In Part A, make sure that you refer to the texts and activities in the appendix VERY
clearly e.g. (see appendix 1, exercise 2). The reader needs to know exactly which
activity you are using at a particular stage of the lesson.
• In Part B, DO NOT write in point form. Please write in full sentences.
• In Part B, you may use first person, ‘I’, because you are talking about your own choices.
- In Part C, if you include a listening activity, you MUST include a transcript of the
recording.
• In the reference list, make sure you give the source for all the texts and activities you
use (e.g. Kumai, N. & Timson, S. (2003). Hit Parade Listening, Tokyo: Macmillan,
p35).
• Include an electronic word count. The reference list and the appendixes are not included
in the word count.
Assessment criteria:
• Clarity and appropriacy of aims
• Clarity and appropriacy of activities and procedure
• Clarity and depth of theoretical rationale
• Presentation (e.g. assignment structure, language use, referencing, layout)
