To focus on extra musical associations with instruments, watch for a few in TV ads and other contexts. Then, to think further about this, look for bands on YouTube that include instruments from two or three different cultures. (One example is banjo player Bela Fleck and the multi-musical collaborations in his “Tales from the Acoustic Planet”project.) Do you ascribe extra musical associations to them, or do you think the musicians are suggesting some?
