Last week, you read three texts that delineated the characteristics of civil society associations (i.e., QAWS, the White Helmets, Bridge Clubs in America). This week, you read four texts about the challenges addressed by civil society.
This short paper asks you to describe the definitions, examples, and challenges we have encountered so far. Based on the readings you have done so far, what does the idea of “civil society” mean? What are some examples of civil society associations and what purpose do they serve? What are the biggest challenges to establishing and maintaining a civil society?
This short paper is an opportunity to practice compiling and organizing information from multiple readings, and you should use your Week 2 Written Homework to help you develop your content.
Your audience includes academic readers who are interested in better understanding the concept of civil society.
Your response should be no more than two pages (double-spaced, 12-point font). You should use paragraphs, grammatically correct and concise sentences, and vocabulary appropriate for discussions that require precision. Put your name at the top of the first page and name your electronic file as follows: Firstname-Lastname.docx.
Your response will likely have four main parts:
- An introduction that overviews the structure and goals of your short paper, as well as introduces your readings.
- A paragraph that summarizes what civil society means and delineates reasons for the importance of its existence. This paragraph should introduce what civil society is and its significance to the authors. Remember that your readers are not familiar with the texts you have read. What do they need to know to get an overview of the topic without the detail?
- One or two paragraphs that provide some examples of civil society associations and what purpose they serve. You will need to go back to the texts you read. Refer the reader to the texts through cited paraphrases and quotations.
- One or two paragraphs that elaborate on the challenges to establishing and maintaining a civil society. Again, you will need to go back to the texts you read. Refer the reader to the texts through cited paraphrases and quotations.
