For this week, we have a wonderful reading by an amazing cultural historian (and one of my mentors in graduate school), Mary Kay Vaughan. Her last book is a biography of Pepe Zuniga, a Zapotec painter from Oaxaca who migrated to Mexico city at the time of modernization and paramount expansion of the city. It is through Pepe that we know more about being in Mexico City. The book gives us a first-hand approach about how this incredible painter of indigenous origins experienced the changing city.
For this forum, please analyze what can we know about life in Mexico City for Pepe, his transition and adaptation in a time when Mexico City was becoming one of the largest cities in the world due to massive internal rural-urban migration.
