As a class, we have covered key concepts such as audience, organizational logic, graphics, and genre conventions of technical writing. In this final module, you will have the opportunity to draw from your developing technical writing repertoire to design a project demonstrating the approaches and concepts we have already covered in this class. This project will ask you to synthesize the work and learning that you have already completed for this class and develop a progress report that analyzes and describes your learning. In other words, this assignment asks you will write a progress report about your own learning process and development throughout this course.There are two overarching concepts that you want to keep in mind as you develop this project. To me, technical writing can address one or both of these approaches:Translating technical/specialized writing for a more general audience.Purpose: Communicate specialized/technical instructions and concepts to an uninformed group, typically as a way to inform a broader population.Examples include: installing a furnace; conveying procedures to a different department/discipline; revising mortgage forms for a general audience and better public accessibility; lab techniques for a new instrument.Or, synthesizing broader amounts of information/knowledge for a specific, technical context.Purpose: Bring together and communicate broad/general information for use in a specific context and for a specific purpose.Examples include: researching the urban garden movement to report on how to start one in a specific, local area; synthesizing information on the multifaceted problem of childhood obesity to recommend policy at schools; creating public service announcements for dangerous scenarios, such as tornadoes; a budget proposal for a new business or school district.Your report will incorporate both of these key approaches/concepts. In short, you will be selecting and organizing a wide range of information (your own writing and work for this course) and unpacking technical concepts/language to develop a report that can be comprehensible to peers outside of this course.Please reference your textbook, Chapter 17 for different kinds of long reports. Pages 468 through 478 specifically describes progress reports, including a sample progress report.Prompts or questions that you should address in your report:Provide me a “story” about your journey in this class using the format/template of a formal report. For example, what were your expectations and base-knowledge about technical writing before you started this class? What is it now? (You can reference the first letter assignment you submitted to me at the beginning of the class.)What are some of the challenging assignments, concepts, or otherwise you experienced in this course? How might this help you address future courses, whether this is about technology or the content?How have you improved or progressed in this course? (This is one of, if not the main purpose of this report. You can reference how you have addressed your peers’ feedback to assignments.)What would you want to have done differently?What concepts do you think you will use beyond this course?You are not limited to the above prompts. If there are other things that are important for you to include, please do so. As a progress report, you want to think carefully about how you are maintaining this broader purpose throughout your writing.Please contact me with any questions as you finalize your final report. There is no “official” peer review for this final assignment. However, I am happy to review your writing in its various phases. Please make sure to contact me in a timely way if you would like feedback. I highly suggest reaching out to other students in this class for additional feedback and perspectives, as we have been doing throughout this course.The submission of your final report acts as your final exam.DirectionsConsider the prompts and questions provided in the Overview above to help you prepare this assignment.Submit a progress report that demonstrates both of the concepts above through the genre of a progress report.Your progress report should include the following components:Be between 8 and 10 pages long, not including appendices.Incorporates credible and various kinds of research; this can include your own research such as a poll or a usability test. Besides citing your own writing, please include the following:Any relevant responses from peers or your instructor.Research you have already completed, such as for your Career Documents and Usability Project.New research that helps you address learning and writing. (This should constitute at least two of your total sources.)Follows clear conventions of the genre, such as a Purpose Statement, Appendices, professional tone/voice, and organized information.Have at least 4 relevant graphics in the form of images, screenshots, photographs, tables, etc.Follows a consistent and helpful documentation style, such as MLA or APA.Presents a clear purpose that is well-connected to the other composing choices made for the project.Provides context, information, arguments, and support in ways that are useful to a specific audience.Presents writing that is free of error, well-organized, and comprehensible by the intended target audience.Requirements and GradingYour progress report must meet the criteria described in the Directions.
