Managing a Small Health Care Startup that Creates/Manages an App for Covid Vaccine Testing, Appointments, and Proof of Vaccination

Company: 10 employees, mostly software engineers interested in health care and serving the public good. The company has recently been put together, may not exist for long, provides good experiences for those working in it, public mission.

You are observing a high level of burnout in the organization among all 10 employees. All are working 50-60 hours per week, making half as much as they could make in other industry jobs. All are doing it in part out of a sense of social service and public ethos, i.e. helping do their part in the pandemic.

Their main tasks are coding and creation/testing of the various app possibilities, trouble-shooting, and simulations, and working with government vendors to design appropriately and pilot tests in the community. There is a sense of rush in trying to get the software in place and working quickly. There is the possibility of additional monies to pay workers from various government agencies. The apps are not necessarily received well by the general public or some politicians, who view such things as an invasion of privacy, etc.

To Do:

Decide the emphasis on intrinsic vs. extrinsic for your group of workers and why this emphasis

Keep in mind relatedness, autonomy, and competence for intrinsic, work them into your incentive plan (below)

Keep in mind nature of the extrinsic motivator and level of worker identification with it (work it into your plan)

Identify key elements of an incentive plan for your group of workers and why (action steps)
