Students will submit a power point presentation before the end of the semester consisting of 30 (minimum content) to 60 slides. Voice recording is not required. The topic of the presentation will be the “science and compliance” regarding an issue or hazard in occupational health and safety. Your topic can range from a type of occupational injury, disease, exposure, or any other issue that you can think of. Be creative. The information on this topic should include, but not be limited to:

• The industries and occupations relevant to the issue
• The potential health effects related to the issue
• The regulatory requirements related to the issue
• Mitigation strategies for related hazards
• Methods for communicating safe work practices regarding the issue.

For simplicity and organization, it would help to make the previous bullet points the titles of your individual slides. Slide titles alone do not count towards the 30-slide count minimum (EXCLUDING TITLE PAGE AND REFERENCES). You will need a minimum of 6 references, preferably 3 from peer reviewed journals and 3 from governmental agency reports (e.g. OSHA or NIOSH). All pictures and images must be cited. Each slide must include content, not just a picture. Each slide must indicate which reference(s) was used and a slide containing a complete reference list in APA format must be included.

week 2a: The Law of Demand

The “Law of Demand” says that output increases when price falls, all else equal. That is, demand curves slope downward. But sometimes we see the price of a good rise when output increases. For example, lithium is used in rechargeable batteries for computers, phones, other electronic goods, and even certain cars. Demand for lithium was low as recently as the early 2000s. Since then, both the price of lithium and the production of lithium have more than doubled.

Today, there are several options for people who want to pursue a legal claim. This includes filing a lawsuit in court, but it also includes alternative forms of dispute resolution (referred to as ADR) such as mediation and arbitration. In both mediation and arbitration, the dispute is resolved outside of court, with the main difference being that mediation requires the parties to voluntarily agree to a resolution, while arbitration requires the parties to abide by the decision of a private arbitrator. Case Study 1

Lamar Smunt, eccentric millionaire, sends Casimir Roginsky, famous portrait artist, a letter offering to pay Roginsky $500,000 to do a portrait of Smunt’s mother. Roginsky sends back a letter that says: “I’ve had the misfortune of seeing your mother and would need $750,000 before my artistic sensibilities would allow me to undertake such a harrowing project.” Three hours later, after reflecting upon the sad state of his finances, Roginsky telephones Smunt and says: “I’d be delighted to paint your lovely mother. Destroy my letter without reading it. It was sent by mistake.” Smunt disregards Roginsky’s instructions and reads Roginsky’s letter when it arrives. He becomes enraged at the insult to his mother and refuses to allow Roginsky to do her portrait. Roginsky files a breach of contract suit against Smunt.

Discuss Roginsky’s chances of success. Consider the following topics:

One month later, Tony’s informed Wombat that things weren’t working out and that his job was terminated.

• Is this contract enforceable under the Statute of Frauds? Remember to carefully read the Statute of Frauds as it specifically relates to oral contracts.
• Is it enforceable under any other theory under which Wombat may recover damages from Tony’s Toy Company?

Write a paper that responds to the questions: What, if any, limits should be set on genetic engineering? Provide justifications for views from the required readings in Chapters 22 and 14.

Please consult the readings in chapter 22, “Genetic Engineering”, for the pro and con perspectives on this issue. Then, choose the article with which you agree most and lead your paper with arguments from that article. Next, counter that article with the views of an opponent. You will do so by critiquing the first article you discussed with arguments from one of the other articles. In addition, supplement one of these articles with one of the readings assigned from chapter 14 on Climate Change. Finally, conclude the essay by responding to the opponent’s arguments with views of your own.

The structure of this paper is a common one for philosophers. Begin with an argument with which you agree, counter it with views of a reasonable opponent. Then, respond with counterarguments to the latter’s arguments. You can develop your own ideas in this final counterargument. You may integrate the third article in whichever way you see fit.

You must discuss at least one of these articles attached in chapter 22 (Not So Fast; Gary Comstock, Ethics and Genetically Modified Foods; Stat Shot) in some way in the paper, even if you merely incorporate elements of it into the paragraph on your view.
