Employment Compensation and Benefits db 2

In part one of this activity, you will first use your point factor job evaluation from the Unit 2 Individual Project to determine the salary grades and salary ranges of the 6 identified positions. In the second part, you will use the pay level data listed on the Salary Grades and Ranges chart and employment data published by the U.S. government to compare the average pay level nationwide to the average pay you assigned to these 6 positions. You will also analyze the differences and similarities between your data and the published data.

Part One:

The positions you analyzed in the point factor job evaluation from the Unit 2 Individual Project were the following:

  • Retail cashier
  • Landscaper
  • Registered nurse
  • Police detective
  • Mechanical engineer
  • Engineering manager

For each of those positions, identify and record the number of evaluation points that you assigned in the Unit 2 Individual Project.

Next, identify the grade to the belonging position according to the evaluation points you assigned for the following:

  • Grade 1 includes jobs with 9–15 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 2 includes jobs with 16–17 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 3 includes jobs with 18–19 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 4 includes jobs with 20–21 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 5 includes jobs with 22–23 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 6 includes jobs with 24–25 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 7 includes jobs with 26–27 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 8 includes jobs with 28 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 9 includes jobs with 29 job evaluation points.
  • Grade 10 includes jobs with 30 job evaluation points.

The Salary Grades and Ranges chart contains the salary ranges for each pay grade according to the data published by the U.S. government. Use this chart to identify and record the median salary range for each of the positions you analyzed.

Click here to view the Salary Grades and Ranges chart.

Part Two:

The U.S. Government publishes data on the national median salaries of all professions. Use the library and the Internet to find the national median salaries for the 6 jobs identified above. Compare the median salaries reported by the government to the median salaries you recorded in part one.

Explain your answers to the following questions:
  • Are your calculations of the median salaries from the 6 positions similar to the national median salaries and grades reported by the U.S. government?
  • If they are, what may this mean?
  • If they are not, what would this most likely mean, and what may be the cause of it?

Next, make an educated assumption about the method of pay for each of the 6 positions listed above: Do you think the method for each includes base pay only, commission, base plus bonus or incentive, exempt, hourly, or some other method? Describe your guesses for each of the 6 jobs.

Enzymes and their function

Within your bodies, numerous reactions are taking place at any given time. Whether it be the digestion of food, the conversion of cortisone into cortisol, or creating sugar – a reaction occurs. Many of the reactions your body needs for survival need a catalyst to help get it going. This catalyst is an enzyme. Enzymes are complex proteins that are necessary for your body to function. For example, in digestion the enzymes help to breakdown the protein, carbohydrates, and fats into smaller components. Each enzyme in the human body has a specific job and only do that job.

There are six classes of enzymes:

  1. Oxidoreductases
  2. Transferases
  3. Hydrolases
  4. Lyases
  5. Isomerases
  6. Ligases or synthetases

For this Assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation on enzymes and their functions. Below you will find an outline of the slides you should include in your presentation. Please note, your presentation should have at least 14 (but no more than 20) slides. The information presented on the slides should be brief and bulleted following best practices for presentations. However, in the notes section below each slide, you will add your detailed talking points for each slide as though you were presenting the material before an actual audience:

Slide 1: Introduction

Introduce the mechanism, or action, of enzymes.

Slides 2–10 (approx.): Guided Research

Research enzymes, then compose a series of slides that addresses the following questions:

  1. What does each of the six classes of enzymes do? (You may use more than one slide here)
  2. Discuss factors that can modify enzyme structure.
  3. Discuss factors that can modify enzyme functions.
  4. Discuss the chemical composition and configuration of enzymes.
  5. Why is it important for the human body to maintain a certain pH level and temperature?
  6. Knowing that enzymes are biological catalysts, discuss the following:
    1. How chemical structure of an enzyme is related to its specificity and catalytic activity.

Slide 11 (approx.): Critical Thinking

  1. Enzymes are seen to be complex structures. Do you think scientists can replicate the complex folding the enzyme has and if so, how might they do this?

Slides 12-13 (approx.): Conclusion

  1. Wrap up your presentation with a brief statement.
  2. Provide a question for further research on enzymes.

Slide 14 (approx.): References

  1. List your references in APA format on the last slide.

Basic Writing Expectations:

  1. The presentation should follow best practices for presentations,
  2. Presentation should be between 14 and 20 slides.
  3. Include a highly developed viewpoint/thesis, purpose and exceptional content
  4. Demonstrate superior organization: use logic
  5. Free of grammar and spelling errors
  6. No evidence of plagiarism
  7. Your reference and in-text citations should follow APA format and citation guidelines.

Ashford week 5 final SOC318: Sociology of Sport

Ashford 6: – Week 5 – Final Paper

Final Paper

Focus of the Final Paper

The Final Paper is based on assignment description below.

Analysis of a sports motion picture

Prepare an eight- to ten- page paper in which you utilize information from the course, textbook, and at least four scholarly sources (in addition to the textbook) to analyze one of the approved motion pictures listed below, in detail. Specifically:

  • Explain the sociological processes you observe using two or more of the theories or models incorporated in this course (conflict theory, critical theory, cultural theory, feminist theory, gender classification model, etc.).
  • Discuss character examples of the personal functions of sports, including: a) feelings of belongingness and social identification; b) the socially acceptable outlet for hostile and aggressive feelings; and c) the role sport play as a cultural element to bring meaning to life.
  • Examine aspects of extra-sport character behavior and determine if such behaviors support sports stereotypes and/or deviant characteristics (i.e., deviant overconformity or deviant underconformity). Be sure to use examples of specific behaviors and situations that you observed to help describe and explain (theoretically) how these social functions were demonstrated.

As you watch the film, take notes concerning not only what you saw and heard, but also anything that occurred that was surprising to you. These notes will help you when you write your paper in terms of remembering specific instances and/or insights concerning fan behavior. In your field notes, be sure to include such things as the time, date, location, and environment in which you viewed the film. Attach your field notes to your final paper. If your field notes are not attached, you will lose points.

Approved motion pictures (you may request instructor approval if you would like to choose a different film*):

  • Remember the Titans
  • Raging Bull
  • On the Ropes
  • The Sandlot
  • Hoop Dreams
  • Any Given Sunday
  • The Program
  • Bull Durham

*Special note: Sports comedies are not generally appropriate for this assignment.

Discussions
To participate in the following discussions, go to this week’s Discussion link in the left navigation.

  1. Psychological Egoism

After reviewing Chapter 1 in your textbook and watching “Virtue Ethics,” find a contemporary article showing how the theory of psychological egoism in a corporation resulted in an ethical dilemma.
    • Is there a way that the decision-making process within a large corporation can overcome this fact of human selfishness?
    • What would be a solution in this scenario?
    • How does the theory of psychological egoism fit within your personal body of ethics and values?
    • How does the theory of psychological egoism fit within the ethical structure of the company or organization you work for now or have worked for in the past?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

  2. Self-Interest or Community Interest

As read in Chapter 2 of the course text, Adam Smith argued that self-interest is a critical element in a society’s economic development. Karl Marx, by contrast, argued that society functions better when each of us is more community oriented.

Pretend you are either Adam Smith or Karl Marx, and explain economic recession from these perspectives.

    • Discuss when greed and selfishness in businesses go too far and become a hazard to society.
    • Stepping back into your shoes again, contrast your system of values and ethics concerning greed and self-interest with the system of values of Smith or Marx.
    • Discuss if the ethical perspective of a particular group to which you currently belong, or previously belonged resembles the perspective of Adam Smith or Karl Marx?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
