Assignment 2: Discussion: Measures of Central Tendency

By Saturday, July 18, 2015, post your response to the prompt in the Discussion Area below. Your initial response should be 1-2 paragraphs. Through Wednesday, July 22, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Discussion Question

Simply reporting measures of central tendency or measures of variability will not tell the whole story. Using the following information, what else does a psychologist need to know or think about when interpreting this information?

A school psychologist decided to separate some classes by gender to see if learning improved. She looked at student scores on the final exam and obtained the following information: Students in boy-girl classrooms obtained an average of 71.4 on their final exams with a standard deviation of 10.8 whereas students in single-gendered classrooms obtained an average of 75.9 on their final exams with a standard deviation of 8.2. She concludes that the single-gendered classrooms lead to better learning.

Assignment 3: Research Design Questions

Suppose you were going to create your own study to examine what course-delivery format (online, blended, or face-to-face) leads to the best performance in a psychological statistics class. In a paper identify the following for your study:

  • What is your research question?
  • What is your hypothesis (both null and alternate)?
  • Is this a qualitative or quantitative design (based on type of variable collected) and why?
  • Is this a descriptive, correlational or experimental design and why?
  • What would be an example of a variable for this study that could be measured on a nominal scale? Ordinal scale? Interval scale? Ratio scale?
  • Once you have collected your data, would you use inferential or descriptive statistics and why?
  • Create a sample frequency distribution for one of the variables. Choose either a simple or grouped frequency distribution and explain your choice.

By Monday, July 20, 2015, deliver your assignment to the M1: Assignment 3 Dropbox.

Post Discussion: Medicaid Planning: Ethical or Not?

As older people and their families have become more aware of the cost of long-term care, middle-class families have found ways of qualifying for Medicaid (Moody & Sasser, 2014).

By divesting their assets families have tried to avoid the harsh requirements of Medicaid spend-down often times in an effort to leave an inheritance to their children.

Critics argue that this form of Medicaid planning is socially irresponsible. When Medicaid spend-down becomes a form of estate planning, critics say, it is a means of cheating the government and using public money intended for those in genuine poverty (Moody & Sasser, 2014).

Elder law attorneys on the other hand believe that families should realistically plan ahead for nursing home costs and that this planning may involve Medicaid. Planning ahead to qualify for Medicaid, they believe, is not immoral or illegal (Moody & Sasser, 2014).

In your post, take a position for or against Medicaid planning and defend it.

Post Discussion: What Would You Do?

Select one of the scenarios below. Discuss the ethical dilemma it presents and how you would work to resolve it. Consider professional ethics and finding a balance between paternalism and autonomy in your decision-making process.

Scenario 1:

Mary, age 83, moved into the nursing home one month ago. She is physically frail but cognitively intact. She raised six children with a kind and supportive husband who died 10 years ago. Her daughters told the staff that she has never been one to join in on group activities.

Mary goes to the dining room for her meals and is pleasant to those at her table. However, outside of her time in the dining room she is spending a lot of time alone in her room and staff is concerned about her.

Do you, as a staff person, allow Mary to continue to spend much of her time alone in her room or do you try to engage her in activities?

Scenario 2:

In the dining room residents are assigned to tables of four. Pete has been a resident of the nursing home for two years. Recently a new resident, Bob, was placed at Pete’s table. Bob is a stroke victim and is unable to feed himself thus a staff member assists him. Pete has become very vocal about not wanting Bob at his table and has been very rude to Bob. Pete has requested that Bob be moved to a different table.

How will you handle Pete’s behavior and request?

Scenario 3:

Betty is 79 years old and is in the early stage of Alzheimer’s. She is a high fall risk and uses a walker. For safety reasons staff assist her getting in and out of chairs and bed. She has always waited for their assistance to do so. However the Alzheimer’s is advancing and Betty doesn’t always remember to ask for assistance. She has fallen twice trying to get up out of a chair without assistance. Fortunately she has not sustained any severe injuries.

Betty’s son has asked the staff to restrain her in a wheelchair to prevent any future falls that might result in a severe injury.

At a care management meeting staff discuss his request. How should this be handled?

Econ Paper

Econ Essay – Unused/ Original Work 900 word min

Due Tuesday 6/19/14 – before midnight eastern time.

The financial crisis of 2008 caused macroeconomists to rethink monetary and fiscal policies. Economists, financial experts, and government policy makers are victims of what former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan called a “once in a century credit tsunami”—in other words, nobody saw it coming.

Based on the analysis of the data, share your thoughts on what caused the financial crisis and whether the United States is going in the right or wrong direction with its current policies.

Focus specifically on the following:

  • Monetary policy
    • What monetary policies do you think caused the crisis?
    • What were the effects of the policies implemented in reaction to the crisis?
    • Do you think the solutions worked in the short term? In the long term?
  • Fiscal policies
    • What fiscal policies do you think caused the crisis?
    • What were the effects of the fiscal policies implemented in reaction to the crisis?
    • Do you think the solutions worked in the short term? In the long term?

Make sure you include the following concepts in your analysis:

  • Interest rates
  • The financial services industries (CDOs, CMOs, the stock market, credit flows, money markets, etc.)
  • Tax rebates
  • Stimulus
  • TARP
  • Government debt and deficit
  • Inflation
  • Unemployment
  • GDP

In your opinion, did government intervention help or harm the economy before and after the panic of 2008? Would you have done anything differently?

Make sure you use research to back up your argument.
