Thesis Statement: 
The thesis is the central idea of your paper around which all your evidence and claims are organized. Every single paragraph should be dedicated in a clear way to proving your thesis. In your essay, the thesis should be stated as quickly and as clearly as possible. In fact, many teachers will expect your thesis statement to appear in the last sentence of your essay’s first paragraph. A vivid thesis statement will announce the steps of its argument, not just provide a flat statement of the essay’s ultimate goal. A good thesis should not state something that is obviously true. When your thesis is too easy to prove, your essay can become repetitive and you may feel that you do not have enough to write about. A complex thesis, on the other hand, requires you to convince your reader that your argument is logical and will reveal ideas that cannot be easily anticipated. A worthwhile thesis will always outline an argument with which a reader can readily disagree.

When reading your essays, I will be looking at three different elements: Content, Style, and Research. You will receive a grade in each of these areas, and these grades will then be averaged together for your final essay grade.

Content refers to the information in your paper. Is it correct? Is it detailed? Do you demonstrate basic knowledge of the religious tradition? Is this knowledge evident in your description of the service?
Style refers to how that information is presented. This includes the way the information is organized and language skills such as spelling, grammar, and proper sentence structure.
Research refers to the quality and quantity of your research.

 

 

Write an essay 2-5 pages typed, double-spaced, citing primary texts (Meno, Phaedo) and academic secondary sources e.g. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy or any of the articles or books listed in the bibliography of the text pp. 155-56) on one of the following topics:

1) Discuss the role of wisdom in true virtue according to Meno and the Phaedo.

2) At the end of the Meno Socrates says that it will be a benefit to the Athenians if Meno can convince Anytus of the conclusions they’ve reached in the dialogue (cf. 100a-b); given your reading of the Apology and Anytus’s role there what lesson learned in the Meno could be of benefit to Anytus and Meletus?

3) Discuss Plato’s arguments for recollection in the Meno; what puzzle is recollection supposed to solve?

4) At Phaedo 86a-d Simmias puts forward the view that the soul is a sort of harmony. Socrates provides at least two arguments against this view of the soul in the text that follows. Describe his arguments and explain why you think they are convincing or not.

5) Explain Socrates’ arguments against Cebes’s objection that the soul is long-lasting but not immortal (Phaedo (95c ff); are they persuasive? why or why not?

6) Compare and contrast any two (or three) of the five dialogues we have studied one of the dialogues must be either the Meno or the Phaedo; make sure to refer to the text by title and line number and cite any secondary sources used.

Health Care Interview Paper – 100 points

The goal of this assignment is for each student to explore how “real people” access health care and how this might have changed over time. Interview 3 separate individuals representing three generations (parents, grandparents, your generation or your children’s generation) and learn how they:

• accessed health care 
• paid for health care 
• where they received their health care 
• how they viewed their health care and health care providers
• what changes they have seen in the health care system
• any other facts or information you obtain from the interviewees

In your conclusion, provide a summary of the similarities and differences noted between the generations.
