Develop and record a 10-15 slide audiovisual presentation to introduce staff personnel to the new or upgraded telehealth technology that was the focus of your previous assessments.

Introduction – Capella NURSFPX6214 Assessment 4 Instructions

Successful deployment of a new health care technology requires that your team be well trained in its use. Nurse leaders have many options to choose from when considering an effective training strategy, among which is the use of Web conferencing technologies, such as webinars, used to deliver training remotely to a geographically dispersed audience.

This assessment provides an opportunity for you to develop a presentation to introduce staff personnel to the new or upgraded telehealth technology that was the focus of your previous assessments.

Preparation

Successful deployment of new or upgraded telehealth technology requires that your team be well trained in its use. One key element of your overall training strategy is to orient your staff to the new technology. Consequently, you have decided to develop an orientation webinar, which can be used to deliver the training remotely using Web conferencing technologies.

To prepare for the assessment, you are encouraged to think about how you might use Web conferencing technologies, such as webinars, to deliver training to nursing staff. You may also want to begin thinking about how you will approach the design of your webinar presentation slides.

In addition, you may wish to:

  • Review the assessment instructions and scoring guide to ensure that you understand the work you will be asked to complete.
  • Review the Guiding Questions: Staff Training Session [DOCX], which includes questions to consider and additional guidance on how to successfully complete the assessment.

Note: Remember that you can submit all or a portion of your draft presentation to Smarthinking Tutoring for feedback before you submit the final version for this assessment. If you plan on using this free service, be mindful of the turnaround time of 24-48 hours for receiving feedback. Capella NURSFPX6214 Assessment 4 Instructions

Audiovisual Equipment Setup and Testing

Because you will make a video recording of your presentation, it is a good idea to check that your recording hardware and software is working properly and that you are familiar with its use. You may use Kaltura Media or other technology of your choice for your video recording.

  • If using Kaltura Media, refer to the Using Kaltura tutorial for directions on recording and uploading your video in the courseroom.

You may use Microsoft PowerPoint or other suitable presentation software to create your slides. If you elect to use an application other than PowerPoint, check with your instructor to avoid potential file compatibility issues.

Note: If you require the use of assistive technology or alternative communication methods to participate in this activity, please contact DisabilityServices@capella.edu to request accommodations.

Read the performance-level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed. The Guiding Questions: Staff Training Session document, linked above, provides additional considerations that may be helpful in completing your assessment. In addition, be sure to note the requirements below for presentation format and length and for citing supporting evidence.

  • Describe the purpose and use of the technology.
  • Explain the potential risks and benefits of the technology.
  • Identify the requirements for successful deployment of the technology, including appropriate training for providers, patients, and the patients’ families.
  • Discuss patient confidentiality and privacy safeguards associated with the technology.
  • Explain how the organization will assess the effectiveness of the technology.
  • Describe the type of ongoing training and technical support that will be available to the nursing staff.
  • Support assertions and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence.
  • Develop slides that augment your presentation.
  • Communicate effectively with staff to support the implementation and use of the technology.

Presentation Format and Length

Remember, you may use Microsoft PowerPoint or other suitable presentation software to create your slides. If you decide to use an application other than PowerPoint, check with your instructor to avoid potential file compatibility issues.

  • Your slide deck should consist of 10-15 slides, including a title slide and a references slide.
  • Use the speaker’s notes section of each slide to develop your talking points and cite your sources, as appropriate.

Supporting Evidence

  • Cite 3-5 credible sources from peer-reviewed journals or professional industry publications to support your presentation.
  • List your sources on the references slide at the end of your presentation.

Additional Requirements

Upload your audiovisual presentation and attach the presentation slides, with speaker notes, to the assessment area. See Using Kaltura for more information about uploading media. You may submit the assessment only once, so be sure that both assessment deliverables are included before submitting your assessment.

Proofread your presentation before you submit it to minimize errors that could distract readers and make it more difficult for them to focus on the substance of your presentation.

Portfolio Prompt: You may choose to save your presentation to your ePortfolio.

Vila Health: Preparing for a Staff Training Session

Introduction

Ana Nguyen and Tara Jennings are making great progress with the plan to launch a pilot telehealth program in partnership with the Murray County Central Secondary School in rural Slayton, Minnesota. This program will allow students to interact with mental health counselors at St. Anthony Medical Center via telehealth technology. Now Ana and Tara need to determine an effective training strategy.

Interviews

St. Anthony Medical Center Meeting Room

Ana Nguyen

Behavioral Health Nurse Manager – St. Anthony Medical Center

We’ve made so much progress with this project. I’m really excited about the potential here and can’t wait for it to kick off. But… we do need to talk through the training strategy so Tara and I can develop staff training plans. This project is a somewhat unique in that, if you think about it, we will actually have three sets of trainees: the staff here at SAMC, the staff at the schools, and the end users – the students and their parents. For now, though, I want to focus on staff training both here and at the schools.

Troy Holland

Director of Patient Services – St. Anthony Medical Center

I think that’s a good plan, Ana. One of the areas we usually cover in staff training is safety. I this case, I think that dovetails with patient confidentiality and privacy, but it’s probably an area that you and Tara should pay attention to. I don’t want to be melodramatic, but there is so much attention to firearms in the schools – you two should determine how you want to discuss procedures for dealing with a very troubled student should the need arise. I read about a similar program in Texas that has actually removed students from the school based on the telehealth session. All I’m suggesting is that you determine how to address this kind of thing in your training. Capella NURSFPX6214 Assessment 4 Instructions

Christopher Hewitt

Vice President of Medical Support Services

Another area to include is the basic back story. You’ve been close to this project for quite a while, but the people being trained have not. Don’t go overboard, but it helps people absorb the training if the understand the context. So, you should be sure to explain the purpose of the pilot, how is the technology going to be used, and so forth.

Frederick Mora

Director of Quality Management – Vila Health Group

I think it is useful to discuss the quality management plans. Explain how you and your partners at the school have defined success. What are the key measures of success and how are we planning to measure those outcomes? As with some of the other points made today, we don’t need to be overly specific with the details, but it helps users understand why they are being asked to do things in a certain way if they’ve been given insight to the big picture.

Blake Carter

Director of Information Technology – Vila Health Group

If you need any help from our people in IT regarding how the Behavioral Health staff can get technical support if they need it, let me know. You might want to consider developing a job aid that can be located with the equipment. If you do, we can help put that together.

Tara Jennings

Director of Nursing Informatics – St. Anthony Medical Center

Thank you all. I have a much better handle on how to tackle the training. One thing that Ana and I will need to clarify is what is needed for successful launch of this program. That’s going to include training questions and will be somewhat iterative I think. We need to have a good sense of how much training is required, how it differs for various staff – the school staff and our own – and who will be responsible for training the parents and students. There’s more to a training strategy than just the nuts and bolts, as you all know. That said, this conversation has helped me clarify things in my own mind.

Conclusion

Activity complete! In this activity, you had the opportunity to observe the planning committee identify key components of the implementation plan. They also discussed how understanding the stakeholders will support creating a persuasive and effective presentation. Presentation Design Tips

Being able to effectively address any audience is a necessary leadership skill. Remember that you are the speaker, not a projectionist. Your purpose is not to present a slide show. Your audience is there to listen to what you have to say, not read your slides—or worse, listen to you read them. Design your presentation slides to compliment and reinforce your message and engage your listeners. Capella NURSFPX6214 Assessment 4 Instructions

The following tips will help you create presentation slides that work to your advantage:

  • Use a professional presentation template, or one used in your organization.
  • Ensure that your slide background provides sufficient visual contrast for your text and graphics.
  • Consider your intended audience and how best to communicate effectively with them.
  • Focus on the content of your presentation and the development of your key points. Remember that your purpose is to introduce the new or upgraded technology to staff with positive results.
  • Create slides that augment your presentation. They should not be your presentation.
    • Remember that presentation slides are a visual medium. Images are more effective than text at engaging your audience.
    • Be judicious in your use of bulleted lists. You might even consider a separate slide for some of your key points.
  • Use speaker notes to record the details you want to communicate to your audience.
    • Speaker notes can also serve as an audio recording script.
  • Use images and graphics, when the visual representation of information facilitates understanding or effectively reinforces key points.
    • Avoid using images that are simply decorative. They can be a visual distraction and do not contribute to your message.
  • Avoid using flashy slide transitions and animations. They can be both distracting and annoying. Keep your slide transitions consistent throughout the presentation.
  • Add a slide to the end of your presentation to prompt questions from the audience.
  • Proofread your slides to minimize errors that could distract the audience and make it more difficult to focus on the substance of your presentation.

Submission Reminders

  • Have you clearly described the purpose and use of the technology?
  • Have you explained the risks and benefits of the technology?
  • Have you identified the requirements for successful deployment of the technology, including appropriate training for patients and their families?
  • Have you adequately addressed patient confidentiality and privacy safeguards associated with the technology?
  • Have you explained how the organization will assess the effectiveness of the technology?
  • Have you described the type of additional training and technical support that will be available to the nursing staff?
  • Is your presentation clear, concise, and effective?
  • Did you address the anticipated needs and concerns of your audience?
  • Is your presentation well supported by 3–5 sources of credible evidence?
  • Do you have 10–15 slides that effectively support your presentation, without being your presentation?
