Case Study Analysis

Your second essay assignment is to analyze a case study—a book or a documentary—from the perspective of a theoretical lens that we have covered in the first half of the class. Your analysis of the case study must be in the form of an argument—convince the reader why your analysis is correct.

Your draft (4 points) should be 2 FULL pages, which does NOT include your Bibliography.

Your second draft (4 points) should be 4–5 typed pages, which does NOT include your Bibliography. It is due by 11:59 pm November 21st. The second draft will only be graded on whether you incorporate any theorists, and the paper’s length and formatting.

Formatting:

  • If turning in a hard copy, staple your paper before turning it in
  • Put ONLY your Santa Fe ID number in the upper right corner of the 1st page—YOUR NAME
  • SHOULD NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE PAPER

  • Make sure there is an original title centered and in bold font at the top of the 1st page
  • 1-inch margins on all sides
  • Double-spaced
  • Spacing should be double-spaced evenly throughout (note that your Word Processor might insert slight
  • extra spacing every time you hit “enter”—see the “Writing Resources” module for a link to a website

    explaining how to remove this)

  • Use 12-point font size for the title, the entire body of the paper, the heading “Bibliography,” and the
  • bibliography

  • Times New Roman font
  • EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST PARAGRAPH (which is not indented), every paragraph should be
  • indented one “tab” (do not use spacebar to indent)

  • Pages should be numbered at the bottom center or bottom right of each page
  • Bibliography should be on its own page, with “Bibliography” centered and in bold font at the top of
  • the page

  • Footnotes should be uniform throughout essay—single spaced, Times New Roman font, 10- or 11-
  • point font size, no spacing between notes

Summary of Steps of Case Study Assignment

Your first task is to choose a case study. Here are your options:

➢ The Poojari’s Daughter (my case study)

Here is the link to the film- https://sfcollege.kanopy.com/video/poojaris-daughter

Your second task is to determine what you want to say about that case study. This will be your

argument and will make up your first draft. What you choose to argue is pretty wide open. The only

constraint is that your argument must—however loosely—come from one of the perspectives listed below.

It is critical that you understand that these perspectives are not themselves arguments, but the points of

view from which you will make your arguments. For example, if you were to choose the perspective

“Religious Experience,” you must not argue that the people in one of the case studies are having a religious

experience (after all, everything is an experience). Rather, you must make a significant claim about their

    experience.

❖ Religion as a Psychological Phenomenon that Provides Meaning

❖ Religion as a Social Phenomenon within Communities

    ❖ Religious Experience

    ❖ The Sacred and Profane

    ❖ Religion and Economic Class

    ❖ Religion and Gender

    ❖ Religion and Violence

Your third task is to consider which theorists we have read in the course are relevant to your

argument. The theorists are there for support, not to create your argument for you—your argument should

revolve around YOUR ideas. Below I’ve listed suggested theorists that you might use for each of the

perspectives. You are not required to use any specific theorist for a particular argumentative perspective,

nor are you limited to using the theorists listed with each perspective.

❖ Religious Experience: James, Otto ((i think this one will go with my essay)

❖ The Sacred and Profane: Durkheim, Eliade (i think this one will go with my essay)

❖ Religion and Economic Class: Marx

❖ Religion and Gender: Gross, Juschka

❖ Religion and Violence: Ariarajah, Rambachan

Your fourth task is to write your second draft, attending to my suggestions and expanding upon your

first draft. Your second draft must incorporate at least one theorist to support your argument.
