Essay Topic/Questions: What were the causes of globalization during the Golden Age? Using “Endowments,” explain the types of goods that were traded between the Old World and the New World in this era? Using “Interests,” identify the winners and the losers of globalization in this era. Using “Institutions,” explain trade and/or immigration policy outcomes in at least two countries during the Golden Era.

The first question in the exam prompt, ” What were the causes of globalization during the Golden Age?” does not require students to employ the “Endowments, Interests, and Institutions” framework. It is a stand-alone question.

The essay topic is below. Students will submit 5-7 page essays (double-spaced, 12 point font) via Canvas by 9:30 am on Thursday, February 11. Grading is based on the clarity of the thesis statement, reasoned support of the argument, and inclusion of material from course readings, lectures, and sections. Since you will be using course materials, no bibliography is required. If you quote directly from course materials, indicate the source in parentheses, e.g. “According to Frieden (p. 23)…” or (Broz lecture 3, p. 12). Late essays will incur a 20% penalty for each 24 hours after the deadline, starting at 9:31 am on February 11.
