CHS 340 Response

This book is similar to the other books we’ve read in its depiction of people living in communities abandoned by larger American society. Consider how Jesmyn Ward’s family and neighbors experience effects similar to the ones caused by immigration trauma. While the people in this book are not immigrants, the lives Ward describes suffer some of the same issues.

For this response, write about the similarities you see in the community of DeLisle and the community of Highland Park where Reyna Grande grew up. In these places, communities are on their own with little support from the government outside of the presence of law enforcement. I these places, children care for siblings in the absence of parental guidance.

What similarities do you see between the children in both books in terms of trauma that has been passed from generation to generation? What similarities do you see between growing up in DeLisle and our own communities?
