D. Dear Favianna Rodriguez: Essay on the Anthropocene documentaryFavianna Rodriguez is an artist and a climate justice leader who contributed to the collection AllWe Can Save. In her essay letter called “Harnessing Cultural Power,” Rodriguez writes about theproblems that limit most of the stories and cultural content about the Anthropocene. She outlinesseven steps we can take to improve our stories and artistic responses. In a number of ways, Favianna Rodriguez’s letter is both a criticism and celebration of the2018 documentary called the Anthropocene: The Human Epoch by Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholasde Pencier and Edward Burtynsky. Although Rodriguez is not working directly with thefilmmaking team, both Rodriguez and the Anthropocene documentary filmmakers areparticipating in a larger conversation about what it means to live through our current age.We are asking you to write an essay letter (at least 1500 words) to Favianna Rodriguez thatoffers your interpretation of the 2018 documentary and the film’s success and/or failure to followthe steps that Rodriguez outlines. In what ways do you like and not like the documentary? Why?Do you think Anthropocene documentary filmmakers take the steps that Rodriguezrecommends? What from the documentary makes you think that? You should assume that Rodriguez has not seen the 2018 documentary, so you will need tosummarize and evaluate the film. You should aim to synthesize the whole film and notexhaustively describe every scene. You don’t need to do any outside research, but you shouldread carefully Raffi Khatchadourian’s essay, “The Long View” posted to GS.In addition, your essay letter should:A. Pick and describe one important five-minute segment (scene) from the documentary thatyou want to unpack. You will explain what you think the filmmakers were trying toaccomplish in the scene and how the scene itself “worked.” How did the choice ofsubject, shot selection and duration, framing within the shot, narration and interviews (orlack thereof), music, and/or editing come together to make the scene work together?B. Use only three of seven possible steps that Rodriguez outlines when you evaluate the5film’s success and/or failure to follow those steps. Explain why you think those steps arethe most important. You should aim to write approximately one paragraph per step.C. Your essay must be organized (what are the links among your insights, evaluations, orevidence? how does one paragraph lead to the second and so on?), well-written,proofread, and it must demonstrate your critical, thoughtful response to the film and“Harnessing Cultural Power.” Use first person pronouns like “I” or “We.” Don’t forgetan introduction and conclusion that bring all the parts together. You should include abibliography or works cited list or footnotes. Whatever citation style you use (Chicago,APA, etc.), just use the citation style consistently and correctly.
