L2: Assignment – Analyzing and Applying Teaching and Learning Theories

(Part 2 of the Signature Assignment)

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for students to analyze data and synthesize information related to teaching and learning practices in a learning environment.

Deliverables: Conduct one interview and write a summary report.

Length: Interview (8-10 questions). Summary report a minimum of two pages (you may exceed the length requirements).

Format: APA style


Conduct one interview with a seasoned (over 3 years experience in the field of education) educationist.


  1. The interview can be conducted face-to-face, over the phone, or using other online video conferencing programs (e.g., Skype).
  2. The interview cannot be conducted with family members, retired educationists, or someone who is no longer in the field.
  3. The interview cannot be conducted via email.
  4. No previous interview will be accepted.
  5. If you choose to record the interview, you should let your interviewee know in advance that you will be recording him/her. Thus, you need to obtain her or his permission prior to starting the interview.

Interview Questions

Develop your own interview questions (between 8 and 10 questions). Examples include:

  • How do you define teaching and learning?
  • Which learning theory or theories do you support and implement and why?
  • Ask for examples (see rubric).
  • Ask about his/her learner demographics.
  • Obtain background information on the interviewee.

In an interview, it’s always beneficial to ask for elaboration and concrete examples. Based on the rubric, you are required to provide concrete examples and debate advantages and disadvantages. So, here are a few questions that you might want to keep in mind:

  • “Do you mind giving me an example please”
  • “Do you have any other examples please”
  • “Could you please elaborate”
  • “Can you think of a specific situation where this happened”
  • “How did you deal with it”

Summary Report

  1. Write a summary report analyzing the information obtained from your interviewee with the textbook demonstrating critical thinking and analysis. 5 -7 in-text citations from Chapter 5 are required.
  2. Include the name, title/role, and business contact information (i.e., email and work phone number) of your interviewee and the name of the institution where s/he works.
  3. Include interviewee’s learner demographics (age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, etc.).
  4. Include an Introduction and a Conclusion.
  5. Use Headings.
  6. Include the list of your interview questions at the bottom of your report.
  7. Format your Summary Report according to APA style guidelines including:
    1. Cover page
    2. Headings
    3. Font: Times New Roman
    4. Size: 12
    5. In-text citations
    6. References page
  8. Review the RUBRIC before you submit your assignment to understand how you can earn full points. The RUBRIC is attached.
