Assignment: The table below has data for
Africa and North America for population, vegetable consumption (VC) and meat
consumption (MC) [poultry, pork, beef] for the period 1961 to 2013. It also has human population for the two
regions from 1961 to 2013 and projections out to 2050. The graphs below show the annual consumption
of Vegetables and Meat in Africa and North America from 1961 to 2013. The units are million tons/year. Using this material, please do the following:

Using the data in the table:

a) Calculate, on an x-y plot (also called a
scatter plot), the per-capita consumption of Vegetables and Meat for each
region for the period 1961 to 2013. Plot
your results, putting the lines for VC on one graph, and the lines for MC on a
second graph. Be sure to put your units
on the graph.

b) On the graphs, put your estimates for the
per-capita consumption VC and MC for the years 2020, 2030, 2040 and 2050 for
each region.

c) Calculate the total consumption of Vegetables
and Meat in Africa and North America for 2020, 2030, 2040 and 2050, and plot
the results on two new graphs (one for VC; one for MC), covering the period
1961 to 2050.

Starting with a new piece of paper:

d) What resources are needed to produce
Vgetables? What resources are needed to
produce Meat?

e) From the graphs created in part ‘a’, describe
the differences between the trends in per-capita consumption of Vegetables in
Africa and North America; do the same for the per-capita consumption of Meat. For each food type, speculate on the reasons
why the trends are different.

f) How did you make the estimates for part ‘b’
above? What factors did you consider when you made the estimates?

g)
Given your estimates of future Vegetable and Meat consumption in Africa and
North America, and taking into account the resources needed to produce them,
which resources do you think might limit availability of Vegetables and Meat in
the future for both regions?

Summary:

For
part ‘a”, you will create two graphs.

For
part ‘b’ you will modify the graphs by adding your estimates of future
per-capita consumption.

For
part ‘c’, you will recalculate the estimates ot total Vegetable and Meat
consumption on the two new graphs.

For
parts ‘d” through ‘g’, you will give detailed answers to the posed questions.
