Project 2:

Interpretive Argument

For this assignment, you will interpret a recent advertisement of your choosing.  Your interpretation will argue how this ad either encourages or challenges the negative values, characteristics, and preferences of the New Media generation (as discussed in our Unit 1 readings).

Keeping personal opinion (and first person narration) out of your essay, you will present a Main Claim, use Toulmin’s Method of Logical Argumentation to structure the body of your essay, and cite sources (including, but not limited to, our Unit I readings), and address at least one counter argument

While the sources that you incorporate (and cite) for this assignment will include: Lam, Hayles and/ or Turkle, you should also draw on points made in any of the Resources on our iLearn site, or from sources found in your own research.

PROMPTS:

1.  Choose an advertisement that you see as encouraging and promoting the negative values, characteristics,

and/ or preferences of the New Media generation, as explored in Unit 1.

Discuss the advertisement’s content, and as you do so, refer to any of our Unit 1 readings to support the

ways you see the ad promoting Generation M’s alleged characteristics.  You should also incorporate at

     least one other outside source.

For this prompt, you might discuss the ad’s promotion of these characteristics as potentially dangerous or

problematic; and/ or, as helping to illustrate that our Unit 1 authors’ ideas are correct.

2.  Choose an advertisement that you see as potentially disproving the negative values, characteristics, and/

or preferences of the New Media generation, as explored in Unit 1.

Discuss the advertisement’s content, and as you do so, refer to any of our Unit 1 readings to support the

ways you see the ad challenging the “ADHD Generation’s” characteristics.  You should also incorporate

at least one outside source into your essay.

For this prompt, you mght discuss the ways your ad challenges the Unit 1 readings’ ideas as

a good thing—as hopeful, perhaps; and/ or, as helping to illustrate that our Unit 1 authors’ ideas about

Generation M may be incorrect or imprecise.
