Choose any three specific criteria (one of the letters) on the assignment’s evaluation rubric below. Discuss only these criteria in your evaluation. You should aim to choose different criteria for each practice evaluation assignment to help you develop an awareness of different writing concerns.
1. Addressing the Assignment
a. Directions: follow all directions for content and formatting,
b. Application: study and follow the advice given in the assigned reading regarding proposal and memo writing and all components.
2. Rhetorical Awareness
a. Target: understand the primary rhetorical situation of the proposal; make deliberate and effective choices for the situation.
3. Focus & Support
a. Focus: focus on a topic appropriate for the Project 4 audience,
b. Research: perform careful and meaningful research,
c. Evidence: include specific evidence for all claims that is convincing for the audience and helps to achieve the purpose.
e. Defense: move beyond description to effectively defend the proposed topic and genre.
4. Organization & Connections
a. Paragraph Focus: focus paragraphs and sections on one specific claim and/or topic,
b. Emphasis: place important ideas at the beginning and ending of paragraphs and sections,
c. Length: write paragraphs, sections, lists, and sentences of an effective length for emphasizing ideas,
d. Order: order paragraphs, claims, evidence, sections, and lists logically and according to the rhetorical situation,
e. Connections: provide clear connections between all paragraphs, claims, evidence, and sections.
5. Genre & Format
a. Proposal Format: format and design document according to the purpose and conventions of a formal proposal,
b. Memo Format: apply all components of memo writing, including format, subject line, introduction, and conclusion, successfully.
6. Use of Sources
a. Types: use source types appropriate for the rhetorical situation,
b. Purpose: use sources in a deliberate and effective way for the purpose,
c. Analysis: describe and analyze quotes, pictures, etc. thoroughly and explicitly,
d. Citation: cite all source material with consistent and correct parenthetical/in-text citation; cite all source material with consistent and correct end citation.
7. Style & Language
a. Language: show careful editing and consistent control of Standard Written English,
b. Word Choice: use words appropriate to the rhetorical situation (e.g. terminology of the class, descriptive (not evaluative) language, third-person point of view, etc.),
c. Formality: maintain a formal writing style appropriate for a business proposal.
Your evaluation should include the following:
- a description with examples of what the writer did
- an evaluation (judgment) of the effectiveness
- a reason (rationale) of why you think it is effective or ineffective
- specific suggestions for improvement (if applicable)
