Multi-Modal Writing Project

Submission Check List

  1. Page Length: six to seven pages worth of polished multi-modal material
  2. Works Cited: must be included as well (makes eight pages)
  3. Six to eight website links successfully incorporated into the written text
  4. Four modes of communication (linguistic, visual, aural, spatial)
  5. Three quotations from 3 course readings (maximum total for entire project)

Details

The total amount of writing for the Multi-Modal Writing Project is equivalent to 6 to 7 pages of text in total from both students. Each student must produce 3 to 3.5 pages of written text (single or double-spaced in 12-point font, preferably Arial or New Times Roman) that will accompany the multi-modal material. Please submit the written text.

The Final Multi-Modal Writing Project must include at least four “modes” of communication. These modes include:
1 linguistic (words, written, or spoken);
1 visual (photos, drawings, videos);
1 aural (speech, music); and
1 spatial (layout, white space, paragraph breaks).

Recall that a mode in this context means a form of communication that represents the way a course concept is experienced, communicated, expressed, activated, enacted, or done. The student-pair is responsible for incorporating a total of 4 modes of communication that do two things: 1) connect to the cultural object presented during the Anti-Consumption Partner PSAs; and 2) effectively represent or call attention to one course concept per mode.

The written text each student provides should be exploring and analyzing the relationship between culture and consumption. The student-pair must incorporate at least 4 total course concepts into the project as they answer the following questions:

  1. Which cultural group(s) outside of the United States consume(s) this object? In which country or countries do they live, and how do they typically purchase the object (e.g. at a store, online, via snail-mail, underground market)? In other words, what does the “target market” look like in another country other than the United States, and who is buying this object? Please provide sales or economic data, and consult me if you are having difficulties finding such data.
  2. What does the life of the object look like? What do consumers do with the object when its original use value ends? How specifically have people re-purposed this object to create new use value for it? (The pair is expected to provide a specific example supported by multi-modal evidence.)
  3. In what way(s) has this project challenged your view of consumption’s global impact on the environment or labor inequalities? Explain why and how.
