Various public opinion surveys have revealed that the American people feel that healthcare is somewhat to very important throughout recent decades. Fueled by the results of these surveys, in 1992, democratic president Bill Clinton began developing, and later proposed, a set of healthcare reforms that would address both the high cost of healthcare and the incomplete coverage seen by many Americans. Ultimately, this reform proposal that would ensure universal healthcare coverage for all citizens was never passed as the cost of reform was viewed as too high in the eyes of voters and Congress (Brady & Kessler, 2010). While nearly everyone agreed that healthcare coverage was essential, the cost of reform far outweighed the widespread benefits of a policy that ensured it. Universal healthcare and versions of the Affordable Care Act(ACA) have been proposed throughout the 20th century. Still, none were successful until March of 2010, when Democrats held the presidency and both houses of Congress. Americans remain divided in their opinions of the ACA, and the cost of implementation will always be high. It seems that the successful implementation of the ACA can be attributed more to the political climate at the time of voting rather than any policy changes reflected in the act itself. Another likely reason for the ACA’s success in 2010 was that Congress was tasked with developing the social and economic aspects of the universal healthcare bill. Past bills were typically drafted by presidential task forces, which halted their progress in Congress. In my opinion, the ACA should be applauded for providing health insurance to over 20 million uninsured Americans (Manchikanti et al., 2017). It has been hugely successful for those at the federal poverty level and lower-income households. However, it has been noted that some working-class and middle-class families have actually lost their employer-based insurance due to elements of the ACA. While it is crucial to ensure access to care for vulnerable populations, it is also unfair to do it to other populations’ detriment. Changes should be made to the act to ensure that middle Americans do not get lost in the effort to insure all.
