Indian Removal Outline

You will randomly be assigned one of the tribes affected by Indian Removal. Read the assigned readings and answer the following questions using a sentence outline. Use the handouts (supplied), your texts, and web resources (posted online) to help you answer the questions using examples from your primary sources wherever possible. You must go to the webpage on Canvas (under Assignments) for more info. (70 points)

  • Read a general account on Indian Removal (posted).
  • Read a specific account for your tribe (posted).
  • Answer the following questions in a sentence outline:
  1. What is your tribe, where is your homeland, and describe your way of life prior to 1830. To where are you to be removed and how do you get there? What were the conditions of removal?
  • Read Andrew Jackson’s “Second Annual Message to Congress (1830)” (handout) and answer these questions –
  1. What arguments did President Jackson make to support the Indian Removal Act of 1830?

III. Andrew Jackson argued that this policy would be good for the American Indians.

Explain his reasoning.

  1. Was the Indian Removal Act of 1830 government-sponsored racism? Use Andrew Jackson’s own words to support your argument one way or another.
  • Read the perspectives from those against Indian Removal from Cherokee Chief John Ross (postedView in a new window) or any of the readings in Zinn, Ch. 7.
  1. Chose two sources (these do not have to be from someone in your tribe), generally describe the argument in each against removal, and include a quote that most exemplifies the piece. [to clarify: 2 sources, 2 descriptions & 2 quotes] Be sure to cite your information.
  • Read John Burnett’s account of Indian Removal, Zinn, Ch. 7.
  1. What strikes you as significant about his description of the journey? Include an important passage in your answer. Be sure to cite your information.

Your outline should be 1-2 pages in length. Follow MLA format for type, margins, font, etc. and include a Works Cited page (follow format). Use the instructions and the rubric to write your outline. Turn in a printed copy (including rubric) at the beginning of class on the due date and online through CANVAS. Read through my Writing Tips before your final draft and consult previous papers. Consider having your paper edited if you’re in WAC for 5 pts extra credit.
