Homeland Security is defined as “a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur” (US Office of Homeland Security, 2002, p. 2). The Department of Homeland Security was created on November 25, 2002. This department of the federal government was created in order to combat terrorist attacks on American soil. However, the DHS has expanded to many other responsibilities since then. The DHS now consist of many components such as immigration services, Customs and Border Protection, FEMA, and TSA. All of these components work to together to accomplish the main goal of keeping American citizens and our infrastructure safe.
Homeland Security is different from homeland defense. Homeland defense is defined as, ” The protection of U.S. sovereignty, territory, domestic population, and critical defense infrastructure against external threats and aggression, or other threats as directed by the President”. The Department of Defense is responsible for homeland defense. In short, the DHS’s primary mission is to prevent terrorist attacks while the DoD protects the U.S. from other sovereign nations. The DoD does not have the authority to seek out or arrest terrorist on U.S. soil.
