Share your Discoveries. Which are the result of you should be keeping a keen eye on the commentary about your social category. Here is your chance to learn more about the target members of your social category. Read the chapter in Difference Matters that corresponds to your social category carefully and explore the works cited at the end of the chapter. Maybe even read it twice. Talk to people; watch more movies, read articles, ask the teacher for resources. This part of the assignment will be broken up into written and visual or musical expressions (artifacts). There are four brief reflections/artifacts you will need to submit for this assignment.

In Preview you will include 4 specific parts to this Discovery:

  1. A Educational example
  2. A Personal Observation
  3. A Target member artistic expression
  4. A Personal artistic expression

After completing your Discoveries you should have a more complete idea of what the needs are for the Target and Agent members in your chosen social category.

Written Reflections:

  1. Write a reflection on at least ONE discovery beyond the reading or viewing of media on our class or in our textbooks that educated you. This should be beyond a corporate web site, like a scientific article, a book, documentary, or a trade archived site —anything from a credible unbiased source that you read or watched that was not a video that was a required assignment that furthered your understanding of the target members in your social category. One example might be to research and find an article from the UW library that explores some of the difficulties of the target group members such as a scholarly article on women receiving less pay than men. Does this still happen? What is the pay gap? Another example might be to research and read a scholarly article that explains the current struggle of American Indians during the Covid pandemic. These are just examples from two different categories. You should focus on your target group.

Include the citation and brief summary. One typed page double spaced 12 pt font of what you learned.

  1. Write up a second reflection on ONE example of an observation that you have made from watching interactions or experiencing, conversations you have been in or overheard, and things you have noticed since heightening your awareness about your social category. (Two paragraphs to one typed page double spaced 12 pt font)

Due to our Covid situation, this can come from a credible social media exploration focused on the lives of this target group.

Visual or Artistic/Poetry expression: There is a special Page on this assignment to help you feel comfortable creating your own poetry and exploring student Art

  1. Include at least ONE example of artistic expressions of the experience of being a target member of this group by an artist from the TARGET group in your category. These could include lyrics, poetry, artwork, creative visual renderings, and photography created by a target group member. This is your opportunity to discover how the disenfranchised express their experience of this particular social identity. (their artifact of their values and world view)

For example, if you saw a photograph that particularly moved you, you would submit a two paragraph minimum reflection. The first paragraph is about the artist and their intention of the picture and the second paragraph is about what the photograph means to you and how it informs your understanding of the target lives in your chosen social category and how it moved your personally.

  1. Create at least ONE example of your own integrated experience in an artistic expression. How have you processed and integrated what you have learned and reflected on regarding your chosen social category?

These could include lyrics (if you chose lyrics you must perform the music), poetry, anecdotes, musings, creative renderings, artwork, CD’s and a movie or photography of your own creation. This is your opportunity to express, in your own creative way, what you are discovering. For instance, students have submitted CD’s of their own music/lyrics written about their social category, collages, artwork, or poetry they have made. You can also record any poetry performance you may decide to do about your sense how you process and integrated regarding what you have learned and reflected on as you have experienced this social category this quarter.

In addition to including your choice of personal artwork, lyrics, or poetry you will need to include a short written explanation of the connection between what you have created, and your internal processing of our material this quarter. There will be a separate page in the module that helps you learn about how to explore poetry and how you can start if you should choose to find and create poetry.

Two paragraphs minimum. Submit this with your item.

You will summarize your discoveries in your final synthesis paper so you don’t need to do so in this assignment .

In Summary you will include 4 specific parts to this Discovery:

  1. Educational example
  2. Personal Observation
  3. Target member artistic expression
  4. Personal artistic expression

After completing your Discoveries you should have a more complete idea of what the needs are for the Target and Agent members in your chosen social category.
