Maguire, S. A., Williams, B., Naughton, A. M., Cowley, L. E., Tempest, V., Mann, M. K., . . . Kemp, A. M. (2014). A systematic review of the emotional, behavioural and cognitive features exhibited by school-aged children experiencing neglect or emotional abuse. Child: care, health and development, 41(5), 641-653. doi:10.1111/cch.12227

Neglect, maltreatment and abuse of children during young years during cognitive development can be a contributing factor in current behavior and future mental health issues when the children become adults. It has been established that child maltreatment not only impacts daily life but developmental events Maguire, et al., (2014). The article study is to recognize that emotional abuse could have influence on behaviors that the children can show. The study included children from ages 6-12 that had previous abuse or neglect. Children whom have been exposed to neglect and, in this case emtional abuse, have had a affects on cognitive, emotional and cognitive development. The children are unable to process behaviors, such as anger, holding emotions inside and self-esteem. As far as behavior, children emotionally abused/neglected children are disruptive and end up having to be sent home on many occasions. Some children do not score higher in grades, did not read as well, but did well when it came to figuring out tasks and that is because in the home environment the child was left to figure out tasks on their own. Children have low self-esteem and are not socially involved with others which means they have problems with getting/keeping friends. There is a connection between child abuse (emotionally) and nelgect and cognitive learning and behavior. (word count-216)

Wells, T. T., Vanderlind, W. M., Selby, E. A., & Beevers, C. G. (2014). Childhood abuse and vulnerability to depression: Cognitive scars in otherwise healthy young adults. Cognition and Emotion, 28(5), 821-833. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/02699931.2013.864258

Depression is a serious issue and the disorder could be a precursor to some adults that were subjected to some type of abuse as a young child while they were still in cognitive development. The article is researching to link that depression vulnerability is associated with child abuse or other cognitive vulnerability. The people who have been subjected to child abuse may not grow up to have depression, but they will carry a scar with them that could cause some negativity within themselves throughout life. Abuse does not always have to be in physical form, but it can be found in a way of neglect, such as emotional detachment/maltreatment, and that could cause cognitive influence that are carried on into adulthood. If a child is not taught to show or handle emotion in a healthy way while in the stage of cognitive learning, then they will carry the unhealthy tactics throughout life. As adults this could lead to deeper issues than those who were not subjected to some form of child abuse. As stated, some people who have been abused may not ever become diagnosed with depression, which is a limitation in the study, but they have some form of cognitive vulnerability inside themselves that comes from the abuse they were subjected to as a child. Seghete, K. L., DePrince, A. P., & Banich, M. T. (2018). Association between initial age of exposure to childhood abuse and congnitive control: Preliminary evidence. Journal of Traumatic Stress(31), 437-447.

As we have learned, some always knew, not only is child abuse a very traumatic experience for the person who endures it, but it causes different feelings and emotional changes over time. The research being conducted currently is how child abuse effects the person’s development during and as an adult. The study was conducted with women who were abused during younger years. The article’s goal is to see if there is a connection between the age of child abuse and how cognitive control are affected. The timeframe of someone’s life in which they were abused is important because it could affect the brain development of child. Studies have found that volumetric changes in gray matter in brain regions and alterations to white matter in specific tracks are related to the age of child abuse Seghete, DePrince, & Banich, (2018). This is important as to why adults of child abuse could have more cognitive issues or mental health disorders from people who were not abused. In this study, there was limited amount of people, only 15, to conduct the experiment. The future research in child abuse affects during important brain development is important as the study shows that there is some initial evidence that some cognitive control issues. (word count-207).
