SPT 404 Final Project Guidelines and Rubric
Overview The final project for this course is the creation of a professional presentation to a potential professional athletic organization for a client who is about to enter free agency. The student/agent will be representing the prospective free agent in the professional sport of his or her choice. The athlete must be a currently playing player who is of great value to a team in the chosen sport. The purpose of this final project is for students to demonstrate their ability to professionally present a potential client who is seeking a new contract to a potential employer. The activities in the project relate to the course outcomes in a variety of manners. First, students will be developing a personal style of representation as they develop the overall presentation. Second, the project will demonstrate that students have a basic understanding of negotiation skills as they present their client in the most positive light possible. Third, the project will demonstrate that students gain the ability to recruit effectively by choosing the correct organization for their clients as well as presenting their clients in the best possible light. Finally, the project will allow students to properly apply the legal and ethical concepts of player representation, including financial and marketing strategy. The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Five. The final submission will be due in Module Seven. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
• Develop a personal style of athletic representation through exposure to basic negotiating tactics and skills • Develop negotiating skills for arranging contracts within the parameters of professional collective bargaining agreements • Create recruiting strategies for successful networking with various sports stakeholders • Apply ethical and legal concepts to current issues of player representation, including financial and marketing strategies

Congratulations! You and your sport agency firm have been selected to represent an athlete as he or she becomes a free agent. As the athlete’s representation, you are to create an 8–10-minute narrated media presentation to a specific organization’s general manager and ownership representatives that markets your client in the best manner possible. Your presentation must be professionally done in slide format using a variety of techniques within the slide presentation. The presentation is a bid to obtain a contract for your client and should state clearly why the organization you are presenting to would want to invest in your client. Your final presentation should be submitted as a slide presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, or similar software. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

Milestones
Milestone One: Selection of Sports Agency, Athlete, and Target Team In Module Two, the student will submit for instructor approval a 1–2-page document that will detail the name of the professional sport agency firm, the name of the client (current professional athlete), and a current professional sport team that the student intends to present the client to. The document should outline the reasons for choosing the agency, athlete, and target team and provide preliminary plans for the data collection, which will take place in Milestone Two. As part of this milestone, draft the first set of 3–5 slides that will include the topics outlined in Section II of the Final Project Document. Instructor feedback should be incorporated into the final presentation. This milestone is graded with the Milestone One Rubric. Milestone Two: Data Collection In Module Four, the student will submit a 1–2-page document that will list the critical data that will be used as part of the negotiation in the bid to obtain the contract for the athlete. This document should include a list of three primary and three secondary sources that will be used in the final presentation. A summary of the content of each source should be provided as well as an analysis of how these sources will be used. As part of this milestone, draft the second set of 3–5
slides that will include the topics outlined in Section V of the Final Project Document. Instructor feedback should be incorporated into the final presentation. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Two Rubric. Milestone Three: Presentation Draft In Module Five, the student will submit a draft of the final narrated presentation (8–10 slides with references). This submission will allow the instructor to provide feedback to the student regarding the direction and quality of the presentation. Instructor feedback should be incorporated into the final presentation. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Three Rubric. Final Submission: Professional Presentation In Module Seven, the student will submit the final narrated presentation (8–10 slides with references). The presentation should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final project. The final presentation should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course as well as a demonstration of the student knowledge of the critical elements of the project. This milestone will be graded using the Final Project Rubric.
