One common issue for psychology researchers is that their work is misrepresented or misinterpreted in popular press. Often journalists confound correlational findings with causality. Journalist may also fail to report important limitations to a study (ex. was the study done with people with certain demographic and the journalist applied the findings to all people?). There are many solutions to the problem of misrepresentation of scientific findings in the popular press. One way you can help solve this problem is to think critically about the popular press articles you read and go back to the primary source (in this case, the research article). You will write a paper that evaluates a popular press article written about a psychological finding. This will be a 3-page (maximum), double-spaced paper. You will also upload a PDF of the popular press article and the journal article it references. You will have the opportunity to have one of the instructors evaluate you articles and outline for feedback prior to the paper due date (see Syllabus for final day to submit your outline for feedback).—Required Components of the PaperAPA style Citation and Reference list for the popular press article and journal articleFor help, visit Purdue University’s OWL site (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html)Or the Writing Hub site (https://writinghub.ucsd.edu)Summarize the popular press articleWhat was the thesis (the point) of the article?/ What does the journalist believe is the impact of this research? What was the journalist’s interpretation of the research findings?Does the journalist speak with the author(s) of the research or other experts in the field?Does the journalist cite or link to the original research article?Summarize research articleWhat was the researchers’ hypothesis?Who participated in this study? What were the methods used to test their hypothesis? What were the findings? Were there important limitations to the study’s findings? What did the researchers believe is the impact of their study (for the field or for the real world)? What does the journalist correctly report in the popular press article?Did they discuss the scope of the study correctly?Did the explain the results correctly?Did the correctly interpret the results?Did they discuss important limitations of the study (ex. was it a correlational study and the journalist acknowledges that)?Did they assert claims that were supported by the research and acknowledge that science does not offer definitive “proof?”What does the journalist incorrectly report in the popular press article?Did they incorrectly do anything listed in the section above?Did they leave out any important information?Overall, do you believe the popular press article is detrimental or helpful in informing the public about research finding and/or social psychology more generally?
