Week 5: Discussion Prompt
We often have different ideas or understandings about similar terms or words. Words are very powerful and the use of them shapes the way we see the world and live our lives daily. The two articles that we will be reading this week explore this idea of words and meaning as applied to two very different subjects that are both heavy and impactful subjects. Read both of these articles in either your textbook or by clicking the following links:
The Definition of Terrorism by Brian Whitaker

Conscientious Objection in Medicine: A Moral Dilemma by Ishmeal Bradley
After you have read both articles choose only one to complete the following prompt for your Week 5 posting.
Prompt:
As you read, look for your Golden Line: A Golden Line is an important quote from the text that you have a lot to say about. Share that one line and explain why you chose it and what meaning you make with the line.
Classmate 1
I choose the article Conscientious Objection in Medicine: A Moral Dilemma by Ishmeal Bradley
Golden Line: an important quote from the text that you have a lot to say about.
“Unfortunately, difficult decisions will always arise in the practice of medicine, and when they do, doctors should work with patients to determine the best option specific to that patient and his or her circumstance. But sometimes, physicians must perform certain tasks for the ultimate good of their patient, even if one has to take the plunge and place one’s personal convictions aside.”
I choose this line because I agree with this important quote from the text on how doctors have to make difficult decisions in the medical field. When I was reading this article for some reason it came to my mind all the doctors that work to safe life’s during Covid -19 and all the patient from last year that got sick from Covid. I can’t imagine thinking if I was a doctor and I had to choose who was going to get the ventilators to help them breath and who was going to get disconnected from the ventilators is like putting your self in God shoes and be the one to dictate how is going to live and how is going to die. This is a really big responsibility to carry in the conscious for the rest of there life. In this situation doctors had to make fast decisions because a lot of life where involved and there was so little resources. Another example that I could think is when some patients because of there religion or beliefs don’t accept blood transfusions some doctors opt out or refuse to do surgeries. In this case I believe that doctors should not denied there services because there are many other alternatives besides transfusion of blood. Medical science is so advance know days that It has been proven that is always best if is possible for the ultimate good of the patient to have other alternatives to protect the person from having a negative effect later on in their life. In this world everyday in our life’s we have to make decisions and at the end of the day all decisions have consequences that we have to live with it. And doctors or patients should not be judge for the decision they made base on doing the best to that patient and his or her circumstance.

What is terriosm? Most people would say it’s an act of violence politically motivated. Targeting a certain group of individuals for political power. For example, when most Americans hear terriosm. I’m sure most of us think about a terriorst group. Acting on violence to gain control of a certain group. Politically motivated to go against our government or military. For, whatever political goal a terriorst group may have. Which then causes people to live in terriosm. Because of, the outcomes caused by political differences. Whether it’s war, taking over countries resources, and so forth. But, this is my opinion, when I think about terriosm. Brian Whitaker stated something interesting though. “For those who accept that terrorism is about terrorizing people, other questions arise. Does it include threats, as well as actual violence? A few years ago, for example, the Islamic Army in Yemen warned foreigners to leave the country if they valued their lives but did not actually carry out its threat.” (Whitaker). In this case, the Islamic Army in Yemen didn’t act in violence. They sent a terrifying message to foreigners. To leave their country if they value their lives. This had me thinking. Is this considered an act of terror? Because, I’m sure when the foreigners heard this message. They experienced terror, and their lives at risk. Therefore, is terriosm an act of violence against a group of individuals for political power? Is it putting fear into a group of individuals without violence? Or, could it be both?
