One way to approach this is by adding on valuable informationto what they have already stated in their post. Each post should be minimum 250 words.Discussion Post #1 LisaBiblical Worldview of AdditionSince 2010 I have dedicated my professional career to prevent, education, and help those afflicted with addiction. For this reason, I have chosen to address this issue in a biblical worldview capacity. Defining addiction and addictive behavior has always been problematic. Although disease-based definitions tend to predominate among professionals, multiple and competing definitions of alcoholism and other drug addictions exist, and no single definition is universally accepted. Some psychologies consider faith in God as an illusion created as a sort of coping mechanism. In reaction to these unbiblical ideas, some Christians discount all psychology. Some fear using a soft science to help people with emotional or psychological disturbances, believing psychology to be too subjective and that man’s problems are better addressed spiritually. Some Christians, especially those involved in biblical counseling, believe the Bible contains all that is necessary to overcome any issue, psychological or otherwise; psychology is unnecessary because the Bible alone is our life manual. What we can agree on is the assurance that individual factors associated with resilient outcomes is perceived in self-efficacy and the perception that one can influence one’s environment. Christian counselors often adopt certain psychological theories in part, but they do not embrace any underlying philosophies that deny God or biblical truths. In essence, Christian counselors use psychology as a tool, but they do not view it as absolute truth. Psychology is not a competing religion, but a field of study that could actually lead to a deeper understanding of humanity and, therefore, of God as Creator, Savior, and Healer. A wide range of research reveals that people have greater confidence in their ability to refuse pressures to use drugs or alcohol in various situations by having the social support and general coping skills needed are more likely to establish and maintain abstinence. It should also be noted that a sense of purpose and meaning in one’s life also seems to protect some persons from drug/alcohol abuse. Jay Adams addresses the life-dominating problem in the Christian Counselor’s Manual. Adams states the person’s focus is in his “problem,” but he has many areas to address (Adams, 2007). This focus is the biblical worldview I should like to address. The church as come a long way in providing support and acceptance to those in addiction. Currently, many in-church supports exists which was unheard of 100 years ago or even 50 years. Online support groups, face to face supports, and bible studies specifically tailored for addiction. The premise being a place of acceptance and nonjudgement. After all, isn’t that what we all want from our church? Are we not reminded in Romans 3 that we all fall short of the glory of God. (KJV Study Bible, 2019). It is important to have love and support from our churches, not to mention the importance of prayer. It is through this understanding that psychology can enhance our understanding of addiction and yet not take away from Gods Word.ReferencesAdams, J. (2007). Addiction as Besetting Sin. For example, these two differ in terms of wherethey get their truth and knowledge. Psychology as a science derives its truth and knowledge from observation and reasoning from observation. On the other hand, Christianity is of the view that people can have access to a deeper level of knowledge by ways and means that do not involve observation or reason. Another point of difference is on the goals for each. Psychology regards meaning as being caused by individual lives and when solving problems, it is based on the unique life of the client. On the other hand, Christianity has the goal of exploring and understanding the meaning of life. When a psychological study suggests a scientific finding that oppose the bible, this causes divergence of views with different people choosing to live bya certain belief and perspective. For people who are deeper spiritually, they choose to reject this finding and depend on their faith. On the other hand, for those whose faith is weak, they choose to view things in the flesh and this becomes their reality. However, there are various points of intersection between modern psychology and Christianity. For example, modern psychology fits in Christianity where Christians recognize and acknowledge that physical observations improve people’s understanding of experience, emotionality and cognition. On the other hand, Christianity also fits in psychology. Psychology is supportive of the step to seek inspiration to inspire change and it comes up with different interventions towards this end. Therefore, Christianity fits in psychology in this sense owing to the fact that it is used as a source of inspiration and strength in order to bring about change.
