Per the toolkit, there are normally 3-6 priorities selected based off the criteria listed (Association for Community Health Improvement, 2017). When taking all the suggested determining factors into consideration, it simplifies who and where to educate based off the vulnerable population and health concerns being sought out. Here is the list that it suggests to view to help decide:• Size of the problem identified• Severity of the problem• Need for correction among the vulnerable populations• Community engagement and ability to act on the issue• Can the impact become measurable• Community and hospital resources to act• Pre-existing methods to correct the problem• Root cause of the problem• Trending health conditions within the community(Association for Community Health Improvement, 2017)When prioritizing my own agenda for the community education presentation I focused on the size of the problem and the severity of the problem first to ensure that what I was preparing to educate the community on was going to be purposeful and important. If an issue is not important or a large issue in the community, there are less people to reach, less collaboration to occur, and less value on the subject matter. After deciding to use the leading cause of preventable pre-mature deaths in my county, Cardiac Disease, as my main topic, I then began looking at data that was previously released to see how the number of cases were trending in the previous years. If the data shows it is improving, what has made it improve? Are there pre-existing methods being used already that I can build upon? If the data shows it is worsening, then there is a need for correction and a great educational opportunity! After the phase of collecting numeric data has been done, it is then useful to reach out to other local healthcare professionals to potentially assist with the prioritization committee (Association for Community Health Improvement, 2017). Collectively we can discover where the vulnerable population is within the community. Educating non-vulnerable members is good but educating vulnerable members of the community can assist in creating equity. Through healthcare collaboration, the root cause can then be identified. By doing this, resources can be used to fight the source of the problem and prevent cardiac disease from continuing throughout generations. If the root cause is not identified, it can create barriers in care and lack of community engagement. If the community has poor nutrition habits, then educating them on cessation of smoking is not completely helpful for this scenario and therefore creates a barrier of care that I did not know existed. So, the technique I used for this could potentially be a mixture of both the Hanlon method and the Prioritization matrix. The Hanlon method uses the data and research indicating what health needs are highest while the Prioritization matrix weighs numerous criteria options to assess which health need is higher (Association for Community Health Improvement, 2017).Association for Community Health Improvement. Unfortunately, not all community health needs can possibly be addressed at once due to lack of resources, so effectively prioritizing which issue should be addressed immediately is critical to the overall health of the community (Clark, 2015). While it may be difficult to determine the severity of each posing health issue, the criteria system used during the prioritization phase can help shed light among key stakeholders and healthcare facilities searching for answers to make the most informed decisions (Clark, 2015).While some participants of the prioritization phase may feel that addressing issues that can be targeted through evidenced-based strategies, key strategies in providing safe, efficient solutions and/or care, I feel that the most important issues to address first are those that stand to create the greatest magnitude of impact. It may be that it will require discussing the data collected for each issue in order to fully understand the magnitude or severity of the issues (American Hospital Association, 2022).I would prioritize issues based on the impact to vulnerable populations due to the increased cost when such issues ignored seem to result in escalated costs later on. This creates a situation that could turn a high-priority issue affecting 20% of the population into a significant issue which affects approximately 30% of the population (Clark, 2015). I feel that prioritization should force all stakeholders to practice foreseeing the impact of each issue on hand left unaddressed in order to determine which health issue should be top priority. I feel if this strategy was practiced, there might be more willingness to act and necessary resources would be allocated. It seems that the best method to prioritize is through the use of strategy lists, which can help determine the level of impact solutions to the issues needing to be addressed will have on the community (American Hospital Association, 2022). I also feel that any issue not addressed immediately can at least be part of prevention through community education. There needs to be more efforts between the healthcare field and the educational system to address prevention measure for healthcare issues not of greatest priority.ReferencesAmerican Hospital Association.
