Primarily check the following elements:What is the main idea (thesis statement) of the essay?How does the writer develop his/her idea/s?What evidence and/or examples does the writer use to support her/his main idea/claim?Are the ideas and sources reliable?Also see the writer/s analyses and/or critical thoughts/ideas on the essay, such as understanding, evaluation, comparing and contrasting and so on based on his/her experiences.South Asian Cultural Literacy (30%): In this project, students will write an essay that discusses some culture, politics, and identity (mainly issues) in relation to “South Asian Cultures.” The topic areas are not limited within any specific subjects; meaning, students can choose any topic and their essays can address any topic area that is related to “South Asian culture.” For instance, South Asian culture, identity (gender, ethnic, and Indigenous, etc), visual art, popular music, and philosophy, etc. as I just mentioned earlier. In this project, students are required to use some reading materials from this course (see the reading materials here) as sources to draw some theories, philosophies, practices, and cultural issues as evidence or examples. (I will provide you a decent number of model essays in Eli)When students write this paper, they will focus on the following elements:What is the purpose of the essay?Who are the targeted audience/readers? Your writing style depends upon your audiences.Who is the writer (writer’s situated cultural identity–state where you are from, what you know about the subject/topic, and also share your lived experiences from your own culture)What is the subject or issue?
