Application: Psychological Theories

The study of psychology as a social science includes different levels of analysis or differing complementary perspectives. Given the major psychological perspectives described in the course text, some have more of a social component while others have more of a biological component. Using the biopsychosocial approach means analyzing human behavior from different levels of analysis, including biological, psychological, and social-cultural. Each perspective provides you with unique, valuable insight.

For this assignment, you compare some of the major milestones in the history of psychology. As you complete this assignment, think about the social influences of how the focus of each perspective fits into the biopsychosocial approach.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Module 1, “The History and Science of Psychology.”  Focus on Figure 1.1 “Biopsychosocial Approach” and Table 1.1, “Psychology’s Current Perspective.”
  • Reflect on why you think each perspective listed on Table 1.1. “Psychology’s Current Perspective” is valuable.

Submit by Day 7 a completed graphic organizer listing the social influence for each of the major psychological perspectives. If you think that there are no social influences for a perspective, provide a rationale as to why not. Then, compose a paragraph comparing and contrasting the social influences of the major psychological perspectives.

You can download a Word version of the graphic organizer here.
