SWOT analysis is the best way to represent the outcomes of environmental scanning for a company (Wheelen et al., 2018). This aims to monitor, evaluate, and provide information from organizational environments and key individuals. SWOT is an acronym to evaluate an organization’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats which are strategic for an organization (Harmon, 2020).StrengthsAs many consumers and businesses alike have learned over the course of WFH orders during the COVID-19 global pandemic, Zoom has presented itself as a key leader in the videoconferencing space. Its strength of a well-designed platform existed beforehand, but its recent popularity made Zoom a verb in our day-to-day life. Zoom’s core strength is indeed its scalable, enterprise-grade, ground-up architecture. The product suite is coded on interoperable technology making it the easiest to use and simplest to deploy. Although Zoom is only a 10-year-old organization and didn’t initially have the market share of its competitors, the organization’s key internal strength of the product wheel has provided immense value to stakeholders and shareholders alike as its stock value skyrocketed in 2020. Other key strengths include employee skills and knowledge. The founding engineering group and the executive team left a large competitor (WebEx upon the Cisco acquisition) to create Zoom entirely in the cloud. These employees were and remain extremely knowledgeable about the videoconferencing space, and their expertise has greatly contributed to Zoom’s success. Zoom’s mission is to deliver customer happiness, and these strengths allow the organization to stay hyper-competitive in the industry and deliver on those core values.WeaknessesWhile Zoom has many notable strengths, there exist internal weaknesses as a result of the hyper-growth the company has experienced in the past few years. The external environments demanded a quick company scale, in which the organization quadrupled its employee headcount and revenue goals. The internal revenue teams have had to adjust to a flat organization very quickly becoming a hierarchical business model. This has resulted in some gaps in understanding, frustration, and the need for a catch-up. While adjusting to rapid growth, the customer-facing support teams also struggled to deliver the company’s core mission of happiness. Many original employees began to reach their vesting tenure of 4 years, and have felt restless in finding other opportunities after gaining a large sum of equity through the company’s successes.OpportunitiesThe challenges brought forth through hyper-growth provide opportunities for the organization to right-size. From a knowledge and expertise standpoint, the company will benefit from bringing in external leaders to help the organization adjust to the new market share. There are many internal processes that stand to be developed and fine-tuned which are opportunities to succeed. While Zoom failed to land its potentially largest acquisition with contact center Five9, there is an opportunity to now develop a contact center internally instead. These will all deliver to stakeholder goals.ThreatsZoom’s key threats are internal attrition and external competition. As previously mentioned, Zoom management must determine how to retain top talent while adding new talent through growth. Additionally, the company is finding itself in a head-to-head battle with Microsoft’s collaboration hub, Teams. This threat will be critical to consider for Zoom’s future success.References:Harmon, A. (2020). SWOT analysis. Salem Press Encyclopedia.Wheelen, T, Hunger, D, Hoffman, A, Bamford, C.
