Conclusions and Implications

In this section you will want to look at the sections in the study after the results. This is usually labeled the discussion section. There may also be a limitations section, future directions, and a conclusion. You can include all these in this section of the critique. In this section you will want to read the study’s findings carefully. What did they find? They should have information in this section about whether or not their hypotheses were supported or how they answered their research question. Most of the time this is briefly summarized in the first paragraph of this section and then they go on to talk about it in more detail. The authors usually state whether or not their findings were consistent with other studies like the ones they reviewed in the literature review. They may also include limitations (elements of the study that can be improved moving forward). You will want to make some judgments about their findings. Are they solid findings? In other words, do their findings add something new and interesting to what we know about this topic? Sometimes their findings are a little dull or simple…and sometimes they found something revolutionary! Regardless of what you think, be sure to state in at least one sentence why you think what you do.
