Social construction of identity and life choices

Interview someone to discover how social constructions of identity impacted their life choices. Make sure that you let the individual know that you are doing this for a class assignment but that you will NOT include information that would clearly identify them. For example, you can identify your interviewee as an 83 year old Jewish woman who immigrated to the United States from Russia in the 1990s, but do not identify her as “my grandmother”.

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • How has your undocumented immigration status impacted your life?
  • What was it like to be a woman working in a science laboratory in the 1960s?
  • How has your religious identity influenced your life?

Take careful notes during your interview and then write a summary of the interview. After your summary, reflect upon the information that you gathered. Was there something that surprised you? How did the social construction of identity shape your interviewee’s life chances? Your summary and reflection should be about 500 words
