These papers will give you the opportunity to apply our course content to the world around you. Papers should be 2-3 pages typed (1.5 pages is not 2 pages) in 12 pt, double-spaced Times New Roman font in MLA style. Works cited pages do not count toward the required page length. Read over the sample papers as a model for your own work. Please note: if you are striving for an A or a B on your papers, maximize your opportunity for communicating your argument by writing three full pages. Typically, two-page papers are “average” and thus “C” papers or lower.Try to conclude your introductory paragraph with a one-sentence statement that answers the prompt (in bold below). Then, structure your paper around three points that support your thesis. Incorporate quotes and examples from the readings and films that back up your arguments. Finish with a short conclusion.Find an advertisement in a current paper magazine and analyze it using what you have learned from Killing Us Softly 4, connecting your analysis to specific readings from this class (Taylor and Johnston, Thompson, and Davis are often useful for this paper). Your thesis should make an argument that answers the question: what message does your ad send to/about women? Take a photo of the ad and include it with your paper (not part of your page count). At the beginning of your paper, be sure to identify and consider where you found the ad (who is the audience for GQ vs Vogue vs Time?).I prefer that you do not use an ad from the internet (some of these are fake) or an ad that Kilbourne includes in the documentary, but you do not have to purchase a magazine. If you can go to a Barnes and Noble or grocery store, you can take a photo of an ad in a magazine with your phone. Do not use the cover of a magazine. Do not use an image from an article or photospread in a magazine. Make sure that your ad is selling one specific product. If you have questions about whether or not your choice is an advertisement, then email me to check.
