This is a take-home essay exam worth one hundred points of the final grade. The exam requires students to apply relevant course material to a discussion of a problem or issue. Demonstrated mastery of the subject matter is the basis of student scores on exams. Students receive points on their essays depending on the degree to which they do the following:   correctly apply and analyze relevant course material   logically connect conclusions to the materials referenced   provide a thoughtful, well-written discussionThe exam does not have a required page minimum or maximum, but effective responses are usually ten pages or 2500 words. The course materials should be the primary sources for student responses. However, students are welcome to use academic research, government and professional data sources (UCR (Uniform Crime Reports), NCVS (National Crime Victimization Survey), BJS (Bureau of Criminal Justice Statistics), DPIC), and news accounts from reputable news outlets (e.g., ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Buffalo News, AP, Huff Post, etc.) to support their arguments. The exams must follow a recognized manual of style. Failure to cite all sources properly, including the class textbooks, will lead to a substantial loss of points. Students should provide a reference list even if the only source used is the course textbook. The exam must be submitted in Blackboard in Microsoft Word or pdf format. Students should submit one document, but each question should be answered separately in the document rather than presented as a single essay. Each question is worth twenty-five points. The final must be submitted in Blackboard by the end of the day Thursday, May 19.
