Throughout this course you have learned that “the term popular culture refers to the pattern of cultural experiences and attitudes that exist in mainstream society” (Lumen). In a nutshell, popular culture is “aimed at the tastes of the masses.”But within our American culture – and within cultures across the globe – are numerous subcultures whose “cultural values and behavioral patterns [are] distinctive of a particular group in a society.” The late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, whose television programs focused on international culture and cuisine, said this about the culinary world he connected with “I’m asked a lot what the best thing about cooking for a living is. And it’s this: to be a part of a subculture…a secret society with its own language and customs.”In my own younger years of the 1970’s Trekkies were a subculture of Star Trek fans who went “above and beyond in their expression of admiration for the [1960’s television] show.” Most people at the time considered Trekkies weird, geeky, immature, attention-seeking science nerds. The 1999 movie comedy Galaxy Quest, satirizes this group of sci-fi admirers.Yet, today there are thousands of subcultures like the Trekkies: subcultures like Weeaboos, Bronys, China Dolls, Sneakerheadz, Harlistas, Furrys, Steampunkers, Neo-Nazi’s, Walking Dead Girls, Hip Hop, Goths, Hippies, Foodies, Graffiti artists….certainly you can add to this list.YouTube contributor Mayuri Sajnani says this about the connectivity of subculture, “It gives youth a chance to express themselves and helps people who consider themselves minorities to find a place they belong in. Subculture aims to unite not divide; to label but not define.”Writing Prompt:After looking at subculture documentaries on Kanopy or other film-on-demand forums, chose a subculture that peaks your interest (perhaps it’s even a subculture that you belong to) and write a 4 page paper discussing its values, traditions, and identity.Utilize a minimum of 3 outside sources from Kanopy, library database, and/or relevant on-line sources.Feel free to use personal interviews as well (these are additional to the minimum 3 noted above) You can also include up to two illustrations (no larger than 3”x3”).Cite all sources in MLA format (in-text and parenthetical citations). Here are a few things to consider discussing when writing your paper:Which part of the population is drawn to this subculture and why?Do factors like age, location, socio-economics, religion, ethnicity, profession, and gender act as a draw to this counter culture? Is this subculture shunned or frowned upon? How and why? What misconceptions surround the subculture? How does this subculture unite its followers ? (this can include emotionally, socially, and intellectually). Are there specific events like conventions or on-line forums that unite them?Essay Structure:*Fully developed Introduction with Hook/Bridge/Thesis – review the handouts**Strong Body Paragraphs with Topic Sentences following the 1-2-3-4-5-2-3-4-5-6 idea – review handouts.
