For this week’s discussion, read chapter one and use the information presented in the TED talk video to (metaphorically speaking) plan your Affecting Effective Change anniversary party. Your basis for response is 2020-2021.
- Words to the wise…use critical thinking skills. Don’t give one line responses.
1) Step 1 is to acknowledge suffering, including our own. What does this look like today? How does this particular acknowledgement of suffering affect your “party” your theme/message (what’s your cause?)?
2) Step 2 is to Locate yourself in the story. Where are you in the story? Why do you think it’s important to “see” or “locate” yourself in the story? How might your placement influence approaches, processes, and outcomes?
3) Step 3 who are you inviting? Who are your “teenagers” (metaphorically speaking) and how are they “living” in the community for which you are advocating?
4) Step 4 name what you see as the problems – be specific! How do politicians try to beautify or “make pretty” the problems you have named. Why does this matter? How does making the problem pretty affect approaches to resolving the problem, potential ‘players’ to resolving the problem, and outcomes?
5) Finally, What’s YOUR SuperPower? What knowledge, values, and skills do you bring to the table to effectively advocate for change? What more do you need to know/learn? How will you go about gaining that knowledge and or skills?
6) Go back over all of your responses and address why this all matters when it comes to affecting change. Be thorough.
