University Of California Los Angeles New Parochialism & Social Norms Discussion

I’m trying to learn for my Criminal Justice class and I’m stuck. Can you help?

We have discussed many facets of the law and social control. In the final week’s readings, we discuss informal social control. Beyond controls based in institutions, we are often controlled by our peers and our larger communities. Using this week’s readings, answer the following questions:

1. According to Carr (2003), what is the new parochialism?

2. What is Carr’s argument regarding “dense social ties” and social control? How does Carr’s findings on the impact of dense social ties influence criminological theories that presume weakened informal controls are responsible for crime?

3. How did informal social control operate in Beltway?

4. How does Meares and Kahan define social norms? Describe two ways in which social norms was said to explain crime and/or delinquency. What law enforcement policies in conjunction with social norms can be used to reduce crime?
