Memory, Guilt, Delusion?

In the official interview given upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017, Kazuo Ishiguro discusses, among numerous topics, the ways in which he sees memory, guilt and delusion operating in his work. We certainly know the degree to which Mr. Stevens is occupied by (consumed by?) his memories. But what of guilt or delusion?

Instructions

  1. Start by watching the relevant clip in the video above (it’s already cued up and runs from 6:53-10:10).
  2. Then decide to what extent Ishiguro’s comments are specifically relevant to The Remains of the Day.
  3. Drawing upon evidence/information you’ve gained from the final chapter, “Day 6 – Evening, Weymouth,” discuss at least two specific ways in which Ishiguro’s comments help you comprehend or interpret the conclusion of The Remains of the Day (recommended length: 3-4 paragraphs)
