Read “America, Say My Name ” by Nguyen or Excerpts from “What Should Colleges Teach, Part 3?” by Fish and “Should Writers Use They Own English?” by Young (See Documents Attached). A note about the Fish & Young piece: Young’s text is a direct response to Fish and is written in Black English (BE). You likely have not read a published academic piece in Black English, which makes this piece so interesting. His choice to write it in his English is very meaningful in the context of the article.
Briefly introduce the text and authors to the reader and summarize the authors’ purpose for writing. Then, using what you have learned thus far about synthesis, connect a claim, point, or other content of the article to something else we have read this quarter. What creates this connection for you as a reader – an idea? Claim? Evidence? Concept? What evidence do you have of this? End with an open-ended question.
