“What type of behaviors to gym-goes display at the UT Recreation Center other than exercising?”PERSONAL MEMOOn April 17th 2019 at 9:30am, I’ve arrived at University of Toledo Student Recreation Center (2800 E Rocket Dr, Toledo, OH 43606). At my arrival, my initial observation expectation was very uncertain. Due to me being at the center in the morning hours, there was a good possibility that I wouldn’t find many trainees. Although, the center wasn’t packed but it wasn’t empty at either. I felt I’ve entered an active environment. As time passes the number of trainees kept growing. Although, the areas I wanted to target for observations were the exercising areas: the weight lifting area, the cardio area, and the running track, the swimming pool is excluded because it was closed during my visit. The cardio area and the weight lifting are close to each other, but I highly doubt I can find a place where I can observe both at the same time because of the center’s layout. Furthermore, the running track area is at the top level of the building where the track overlooks the basketball field. I found it hard to observe the people on the running track because there’s no place for me to sit or even stand, this level is just a running track. Moreover, there was a seat in the middle between the two areas, while it had me look over one area but give my back and ignore the other. So, in this one also, I have to observe them individually. Initially, I found a bike exercising spot where it gives me the ultimate vision to observe the whole weight lifting area. So, because I was already in my gym cloths I thought I would imitate doing low-exercise bike while taking notes on my phone. As for observing the cardio area, I thought it would be more difficult because I can’t stay on the weight-lifting or exercising machines area (adjacent cardio-area) pretending that I’m on a machine as long as I could on the bike. So, at this point I had to walk around to observe people and then would step aside focusing on writing down my notes. I also would take time by sitting on some resting seats to observe as much as I can. Finally, the track area, wasn’t too bad experience for me. As there weren’t many people on the track, made it easy of an observation. The best approach was for me to walk in the walking lane of the track and prepare my notes. I believe this is the least area that I’ve observed active behavior in it.Earlier, as I walked into the center I noticed sanitation stations are usually in the middle of each area. It’s a table with brown paper towels and sanitizer bottle. Not to forget, the help desk at the entrance of the center had sanitation equipment on the desk, which is the first thing I’ve observed.OBSERVATION NOTESAn African American male wearing headphones, exercised on the bench-press wearing a tank top, where the quarter of his back touched (direct contact) the seat. After he is done with his exercise he just walked away to another machine. An Asian male staff was on his phone browsing his social media behind the help desk. Another African American male staff next was at the same desk was watching a football game on his phone. Also, there was a female on the back sorting some supplies behind the same desk.A Caucasian female was on the treadmill walking. (I assume this is her warm-up exercise since I observed her just walked in). After about 3 minutes, two caucasian females walked to her (her friends, I assume) standing beside the treadmill talking with her.A Caucasian male was giving instructions to another Caucasian male (his trainee, I think). The trainee was Plank- exercising on small yoga matt. Also, the personal trainer was holding a stop watch in his hand and counting the time to his trainee.About 15 minutes in, I heard someone complaining about a treadmill that it doesn’t work. So, I turned around and I saw an African American female having conversation with the helpdesk. Part of the conversation I heard was “I’ve always used this treadmill and it always work, I like this treadmill spot because it’s kind of isolated and make me focus on my workout”. The person behind the help desk went to go check if the treadmill is plugged to the port or not. But, it wasn’t. 10 minutes later, a hand-written sign that read ‘Out of service’. was hanged on the treadmill. There was a group of 4 people (3 Caucasian males and 1 African American male) standing in the middle between the cardio area and the weight-lifting having conversation. I was a bit far from them to hear what the conversation is about, but I can assume from there hand gestures they were talking about sports. At the corner, far from all the machines and people, I observed an Asian female with headphones on. She had a backpack on the floor next to her that she reached and pulled a jumping rope. She started jump roping for about 4-6minutes.After taking these notes, I went up to the running track floor. At first, I’ve only seen one Caucasian elderly male walking on the right side of the track. He had a book in his hand, but he wasn’t reading it. He was just holding it. I was curious if he was trying to read while exercising or he actually read when he takes break. I observed him walking about 1 mile. Most of the time he waved and smiled at me every time I cross him. He was a friendly man! After some time, I observed a Caucasian female employee walking around the track with a board in the hand marking stuff. It seems she was getting a count of people in each area or stats of each floor. After she was done with the track floor, she head down the floor that I’ve already observed. I got close to the stairs to see if she was going to check other floors, but she just went back behind the main desk. (Assuming that the running track was her last place to check)While standing on the stairs, an African American female was coming up to the floor with a gym bag. She put her bag in the corner, away from the track and sat down beside it. She pulled a water bottle and a powder bag. She mixed them both, which it appears to me it’s either protein or some vitamin drink. After that she got her headphone connected to her phone. Sat there for about 2-3 minutes then got up, did light body stretch and started jogging in the middle track.INTERPRETATIONAt the begging I found my observations expectable, but as time moves on a lot of points of view have changed. I expected, it’s morning time, so I might not see a lot of people that exercise at a university gym. I also observed some elder individuals training, unlike my initial expectations of finding mostly the students. Unexpectedly, the number of people kept growing. One elderly man, maybe a professor at the university or someone from Toledo, was very encouraging to me and to others by seeing his consistent workout and his pleasant and motivating routine. From my notes, I feel like it’s important to acknowledge that most people do take gym a socializing opportunity, while others, like to be isolated by having headphones on be complete away from everybody. Last thing, there are numerous unsanitary behaviors, like people only use the brown towel to wipe their sweat and don’t bother using the sanitizer. Sadly, I observed very few people cleaning their machine pre or post. The most behavior I’ve observed during my stay is using cellphone. It seems people would socialize in the gym only with the people they know otherwise isolation would be the theme for most of them. The post “What type of behaviors to gym-goes display at the UT Recreation Center other than exercising?” appeared first on Lion Essays. “Looking for a Similar Assignment?
