OVERVIEW

In her essay “Give,” Anne Frank uses various rhetorical strategies to persuade her reader that people should be generous with those less fortunate. In your discussion board, you shared your opinions about what strategies she used, what were her arguments and how effective was she in convincing the reader. Your essay will analyze that effectiveness. Do you think she convinces the reader? The answer to that question is your thesis statement. You will argue that she is persuasive or not and give quotes to support your position.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • From Frank’s essay, identify at least one main argument. You may cite more than one.
  • Identify at least three persuasive strategies the author uses to persuade her audience.
  • Clearly state your thesis in the first paragraph.
  • Your thesis is your opinion as to whether her use of strategies is persuasive.
  • Write a topic sentence for each body paragraph that clearly states the main idea of that paragraph.
  • There are no page numbers or paragraph numbers in the original essay, so you do not need to cite page or paragraph for your quotes and paraphrases.

This essay will follow the general structure of an introduction with a clearly stated thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

  • The introduction paragraph must include: title of the text, author’s name, context or background (what is happening around Frank when she wrote this essay?), and summary of the topic Frank is writing about. Discuss at least one of her arguments and give quotes to support that argument. You may cite more than one argument and give quotes as support. In the last sentence of the introduction, state clearly your thesis.
  • The body paragraphs will identify the author’s strategies and discuss why they are effective or not effective. Use quotes and your analysis of the quotes to support your opinion.
  • The conclusion should wrap up or summarize your main points, her strategies and your opinion as to their effectiveness. End on a point for the reader to think about. This could be a statement or a question. For example, what are her goals (purpose) in writing this essay? Or, imagine the benefits if more people followed her advice.

This essay is not agreeing or disagreeing with her arguments. You are analyzing her effective use of rhetorical strategies.

Your essay will not be graded on your writing talent, but on the effort you put into writing this essay, on correct MLA formatting, and on the two page count minimum.

All essays in this class may be revised.
