You must answer each part of the question correctly and with details. Write your answers in paragraph format using complete sentences. Each of the 5 questions should be at least 2 paragraphs.QUESTIONS:1. Compare sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Specifically, compare and contrast how each type of rock is formed, including the type of material it’s made from, how that material turns into a solid rock, and if applicable, which temperatures and pressures each rock type forms in. Talk about some signature characteristics of each rock type that you could use to identify them in the field, and how the amount of silica (felsic/intermediate/mafic/ultramafic) in the rocks affects their physical properties and appearance. Talk about how each of the three rock types fits into the rock cycle, and how each type can turn into the other two.2. Discuss the mechanisms deep in the Earth that drive plate tectonics and the movements of tectonic plates, and at least two scientists whose discoveries shaped our understanding of these processes. Discuss the types of stresses and faults commonly found at each type of tectonic plate boundary, and the resulting features (i.e. earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain building, etc.) found at each type of plate boundary. Compare the maximum magnitude of earthquake that could occur along each type of fault. Describe some landforms commonly associated with faults that could help you identify them in the field.3. Discuss the main types of mass wasting, including landslides, rockfalls, debris flows, etc. Compare and contrast the physical mechanisms (precipitation, gravity, earthquakes) that trigger various types of mass wasting, and what type of material is being transported in each type of flow. Describe which areas in Napa County are the most prone to mass wasting, and make an educated guess as to why.4. Discuss the water cycle, including how water on Earth can transition from ice in glaciers, to liquid water in the oceans, to water vapor in the atmosphere, to precipitation, to surface water, and finally to groundwater. Discuss the information we can gather about patterns of precipitation, drought, and human water use by monitoring stream gauges and groundwater levels in wells (hydrographs). Discuss how over drafting groundwater aquifers can lead to a permanent reduction in their holding capacity.5. Discuss the geologic hazards you should look for when buying a property, including earthquakes, liquefaction, landslides/mass wasting, and flooding. Discuss how each of these hazards can affect a house or apartment building, and how you would go about gathering information about the amount of risk from each of these hazards for a location in Napa County. Finally, discuss how climate change and melting glaciers are likely to affect Napa County in the future, and what steps we can take now to protect ourselves from the worst of these effects.
