Grossmont Cuyamaca Learning Styles Exercise

For this assignment we are going to do a couple of things!  First you are going to take a learning style quiz: http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles-quiz.shtml  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. This is a bit fun, but is also important.  It can teach you what the best way to study is….and can save you much time.  For example, when I was in college, I studied for tests by making index cards.  However, I didn’t learn best by reading…I learned best by doing!  So instead of spending time with the cards, I should have spent more time drawing pictures or talking about the assignment.  So take this test, and post what kind of learning style it tells says you have.  And then, based on results, what type of assignments would you like to see more of in an onlineclass that you think would help you learn best.  Recently, there has been some debate as to how accurate the idea of learning styles is, but it will certainly give you something to think about!

And then read Chapter 4 (paying attention to these:

 Early Societies in Southeast Asia

This chapter looks at early civilizations from the area around present day Pakistan and India.  It pays attention to the culture there, focusing on religion.

Harappan Society

-Harappan Society started by the Indus River in present day Pakistan

-Harrappa and Mohenjo-daro: Two cities by the Indus river around 2000 BCE: You should know what these cities were like.  Understand the culture, Fertility Cults,

-Know the theories of what led to their decline

Indo European Migrations and Early Vedic India

-After the Harappans declined Aryans (you remember them?) moved into the Indus area they clashed with the Dravidians who were already in the area.

-The Aryans composed Vedas Hymns, Prayers and rituals

-Aryans called their enemies Dasas and had Rajas as kings

-They had a Caste system (Varna), know about Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, and untouchables. Also understand the basics of this Caste System

Lawbook of Manu: basic laws for life in ancient India. Circa 500 BCE

.           Patriarchal society.  Even Sati where a woman would commit suicide when her husband dies.

Religion in the Vedic Age

           -Know about the Aryan Religion

Upanishads: Works that discussed religious principles: Samsara what we might call reincarnation, and Karma, if you do good in this life you it will mean your next life ill be better…if you do bad…uh oh!

and then come up with an example of an assignment that would help you remember the material in Chapter 4 Using specific examples from the Chapter, explain what that assignment would be!
