Week 9 Assignment – Applying Legal Knowledge to Business Organization, Agency, Liability, and Contracts.
Introduction
In this assignment, you will make determinations for each of the scenarios provided below. Read the scenarios, answer the three questions that follow in a 2–4 page paper, and include at least two academic sources to support your decisions and rationale.
Scenarios
1. Otis Owner loves to bake cookies. Everyone loves his cookies, and his friends recommend that Otis open his own shop. Otis likes the idea, and after saving some money, decides that he will open his own business. Otis is familiar with sole proprietorships, limited liability companies, and corporations, but he is unsure which option would be best for his business.
Consider the scenario and answer the following question:
Determine if Otis should select a sole proprietorship, limited liability company, or corporation. Explain why the form of business organization selected is the best for Otis.
2. Otis hires Kelly Kleaner to help in his shop. Kelly enjoys the job, is always on time, and is happy with the hourly pay. Otis, however, is concerned about his liability if Kelly injures someone while working at his business. After Kelly mopped the floor one day, Doug Driver shows up to deliver a package and slips on the wet floor. Doug breaks his leg.
Consider the scenario and answer the following questions:
Determine if Otis is responsible for the injuries suffered by Doug Driver. Explain the elements of an agency relationship as they relate to the scenarios in your response.
3. Otis is looking to expand his business. He has the opportunity to make sugar-free cookies using a new artificial sweetener. The sweetener is very inexpensive and would increase Otis’ profit margin. However, there are some health concerns about the artificial sweetener and studies show that it may cause cancer. Otis would like to increase his profits, but he is concerned about the health risks of using the artificial sweetener.
Consider the scenario and answer the following question:
Should Otis use the artificial sweetener? Discuss both the financial and ethical implications of Otis’ decision.
Instructions
In a 2–4 page paper, answer the three questions relating to the scenarios. Be sure to cite your sources and include a reference page with at least two (2) academic sources.
Academic sources can also be called scholarly sources. The sources may be books, journal articles, and published expert reports. Academic sources have been peer-reviewed, which means they have been reviewed by experts on those topics.

Throughout the semester, we have read and discussed the meaningfulness of the categories of “identity politics,” “intersectionality,” and “anti-identity politics” for feminist, queer, and disability theory. In your estimation, HOW does a liberal versus a left approach to theorizing the problem AND organizing people against the oppression of women, queer women and trans and gender non-conforming peoples’(TGNC) transform how we understand the problem and inform possible solutions? Further, what are the limitations of each approach politically speaking?
In your response you are required to define and discuss not only the three theoretical categories/concepts in a nuanced way that is reflective of the readings, but also where you personally judge identity politics, intersectionality, and anti-identity politics to fall politically speaking–more along liberal or left leaning lines?
You are required to pick 3 of the following assigned readings: Hooks; Taylor AND Smith; Anzaldúa; Jagose; John-Barker and Scheele; de Beauvoir, Cohen; Gieseking; Rohrer; Hischmann; Bracewell; Arvin, Tuck, and Morrill; Deer, but you should choose readings that complement each of the three theoretical categories: identity politics, intersectionality, and anti-identity politics.

Complete the following scenario-based problems. Prepare a document to explain your answers and graph your solutions. Make sure to use references in APA format to support your positions.
Joshua’s income increases, while federal taxes increase; therefore, please illustrate by constructing a supply and demand graph, the direction in which the curves will shift and state the new equilibrium price and quantity; for example, state whether price and quantity increased, decreased, or are indeterminate. Please explain your rationale based on the determinants of demand and supply.
Winston is disappointed in the new SUV he recently purchased. He was excited about the new technology incorporated in his SUV but they did not live up to his expectations; therefore, please illustrate by constructing a supply and demand graph, the direction in which the curves will shift and state the new equilibrium price and quantity; for example, state whether price and quantity increased, decreased, or are indeterminate. Please explain your rationale based on the determinants of demand and supply.
Kim is in the market for a new automobile, and since she was just promoted at work, her tastes in higher-end automobiles has increased, but to her surprise taxes have decreased, which make a new automobile more attractive; therefore, please illustrate by constructing a supply and demand graph, the direction in which the curves will shift and state the new equilibrium price and quantity; for example, state whether price and quantity increased, decreased, or are indeterminate. Please explain your rationale based on the determinants of demand and supply.
U.S. agricultural farmers are excited since the government announced an increase in subsidies even though the substitutes for agricultural goods that are imported have increased in demand; therefore, please illustrate by constructing a supply and demand graph, the direction in which the curves will shift and state the new equilibrium price and quantity; for example, state whether price and quantity increased, decreased, or are indeterminate. Please explain your rationale based on the determinants of demand and supply.

For this essay, you will select two different kinds of sources to compare and co

or this essay, you will select two different kinds of sources to compare and contrast how they approach the same topic from their respective positions. You have control over what the two texts are but they must be different (for example, do not select two Washington Post news articles because they will be too similar; do select a Washington Post article and then a Youtube video about the same topic).
First you will describe the topic the two texts discuss. Then you will rhetorically analyze how each text presents the topic in their rhetorical situation, discussing how their purpose, audience, message, ethos, genre, context/circumstances and rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) affect how the text was created and received. Your comparison should include discussion on how effective each text is in meeting their rhetorical situation. You are not reacting to the texts or otherwise incorporating your own personal opinion: you are analyzing the texts for how they are constructed and how those constructions impact their audiences.
When reporting your sources, follow the best practices for quoting and paraphrasing: signal phrases, in-text citations, changing enough of the original words and sentence structure when paraphrasing to avoid plagiarism, etc.
Example of Topic Ideas:
Scholarly source vs. Popular source (The Lancet’s “Carcinogenicity of Consumption of Red and Processed Meat” vs. NPR’s “Bad Day For Bacon: Processed Meats Cause Cancer, WHO Says”)
Hyper-partisan topic (Mask mandates, Roe v Wade appeal, Inflation, Gas Prices, etc)
Requirements:
Two sources for comparison (you may have additional research if it helps with the analysis)
1000-1400 words
MLA format and citations
Works Cited page
Rubric:
summarized topic- 10%
rhetorical situation-30%
rhetorical appeals-15%
compares texts-20%
appropriate source use-15%
MLA citations, formatting, and editing- 10%
evaluation of rhetorical situations-25%
(also if possible, please add a rough draft!)
Thank You!!!

Instructions:
The assignment consists of 3 case studies involving the use of antibiotics.
Questions are to be answered in detail and presented as a typed document.
The questions should be answered using lecture material as well as additional sources such as recommended texts and other supplementary material. All referenced material should be cited in the text and included in a bibliography.
Case study 1
Barry presents with constant pain in the upper right quadrant, fever, and nausea. Upon further investigation, Barry is diagnosed with acute cholecystitis. Blood culture reports indicate evidence of sepsis, which is likely due to the enteric bacteria Escherichia coli. Barry is prescribed intravenous amoxicillin, 1 g every 6 hours.
Explain the mode of action of this class of antibiotics, regarding their specific molecular targets, and how they result in the death of the bacterium. (2 marks) Initially, the treatment appears to be effective. However, after several days, the symptoms return. The prescribed antibiotic now appears to be less effective.
How can bacteria produce resistance to this class of antibiotics? Why does cross- resistance occur? It is suggested that additional treatments be used to improve the effectiveness of amoxicillin.
What can be used to enhance the effectiveness of this class of antibiotics in resistant bacteria?
Why is it generally considered more difficult to treat infections caused by gram-negative bacteria?
Case study 2
Larry has been experiencing fever, pleuritic chest pain, and a new-onset cough. Chest X- ray indicates community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Patient mortality and hospital length of stay are significantly reduced if treatment is commenced within 8 hours, and so Larry is immediately administered intravenous penicillin, 1 g every 8 hours for 7 days.
However, within 1 hour of initial administration, Larry develops urticaria and bronchospasm, and finally anaphylaxis.
How is anaphylaxis normally treated to restore airway function in this patient?
What are the allergenic determinants behind this hypersensitivity reaction?
Will the patient likely experience a similar reaction to carbenicillin and cefuroxime?
Due to the immediate hypersensitivity reaction, Larry’s penicillin treatment has been replaced with oral moxifloxacin, 400 mg daily for 7 days.
What is the mechanism of action for this class of antibiotics?
Microbiological investigation of Larry’s sputum reveals that the infection is due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. As such another antibiotic, oral doxycycline (200 mg then 100 mg daily for 5 days), has been added to the treatment.
What is the mechanism of action for this class of antibiotics?
What adverse effects may be seen with the use of tetracyclines, and when should they not be used? What is the mechanism behind these effects?
Case study 3
Sally complains of frequent urination accompanied by a burning sensation. Upon examination, Sally’s urine sample appears cloudy. Urinalysis confirms the diagnosis of a urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Sally is subsequently administered intramuscular gentamicin, 3 mg/kg/day for 7 days, with blood concentrations of the antibiotic being monitored regularly. High fluid intake and complete bladder emptying have been recommended to Sally to assist with antimicrobial therapy for UTIs. The overall treatment has appeared effective in treating the infection.
1. Describe the mechanism of action for the antibiotic gentamicin. Why must the blood concentrations of gentamicin be monitored regarding potential toxicities?
This was the third UTI that Sally contracted within the last 12 months. As such, it is suggested that Sally begin antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent future infection. Sally has been prescribed oral trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (cotrimoxazole, 160 mg, and 800 mg respectively), to be taken at night for the next 6 months.
Describe the mechanism of action for the two antibiotics, trimethoprim, and sulfamethoxazole.
Why are these two drugs more effective when used in combination?
Describe how bacterial resistance can develop to these two drugs.

This semester, you will write three related, ARGUMENTATIVE papers about a topic

This semester, you will write three related, ARGUMENTATIVE papers about a topic inspired by Pollan’s chapters we’ve read. You shouldn’t try to recreate his argument; instead, you are writing about an idea he mentions or a topic related to his work. Begin brainstorming such an idea.
Your topic should span two shorter papers and a final which combines your first two essays.
Generally, students will find themselves in one of two groups. 1) You may choose to write two shorter essays on different, but related, ideas. For the final, you will revise your thesis so it is comprehensive and combines both. 2) Another option is to write both essays with the same essential argument. In that case, you would combine everything into your final.
In either case, you will write three independent, stand-alone essays with their own introductions, bodies, and conclusions. (No, you needn’t strictly follow a five paragraph essay format drilled into your mind during high school.) Along the way, you will revise your work and make it stronger in order to avoid copying for the final. While you are allowed to use the same material, you’ll find you need revision to make everything work.
You MUST include Pollan in each paper. (You are also encouraged to read chapters not assigned for class readings.) The rest of your sources should be a well-diversified group of materials. That includes journals, full-length researched books, reference materials, quality Web sites, etc.
PAPERS MUST BE NEW, ORIGINAL WORK. If you have a paper you’ve used in the past – even one that is closely related – you need to pick a new topic! All students should be starting at the same point (and, yes, it is technically possible to plagiarize yourself when using older work).
– You have already written the first essay and now this week we are writing the second paper out of 3 and I have added an sample paper from the professor for a little help. There are paper checklist that you have to follow which is also been added. There are some lists of topics you have to avoid. I have also added the first essay and the sample one as well for you to look. 137793-137793-influencers-of-food-choices-final-docx.docx is the one you wrote earlier for the first paper.
Topics to Avoid
Do not write about the following topics:
Fast food
Obesity
Animal testing
Diet and exercise
Animals in captivity
Energy drinks
Smoking or vaping
Agricultural diversity (as argued in our sample paper)
The following topics are, in general, too vague. If you have more specific environmental concerns, we can discuss more focused papers about environmental issues:
Climate change
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
*Your paper must be directly connected to Pollan. If your connection is not obvious, missing, or weak, I will not accept your paper.
