Ana is a 45-year-old African-American female that presented to her physician’s office for her annual check-up. Ana has a history of diabetes, obesity, and noncompliance with diet and medications to control her diabetes. “I just can’t afford those meds, my girls need braces!” she shrugs. She is wearing a breast cancer awareness shirt and mentions that she beat breast cancer 10 years ago with chemo, radiation, and left-sided radical mastectomy. She a single mother of three teenagers and has migraines with each monthly cycle. During the history review, Ana shares with you that she has not been feeling like herself for the past six months, she has been unusually tired and her migraines have been more frequent and debliating. She stated, “I am very busy with my children; I haven’t had time to get it checked out, but my headaches are so severe, I’ll miss work. And what’s even stranger is I will have nausea and vomiting but outside my migraines. At first, I thought I ate something that didn’t agree with me, but it’s too unpredictable for that.” Her oldest daughter is with her and mentions that she sometimes talks and walks “funny.” Ana has a positive family history of breast cancer; both her mother and grandmother have been treated for breast cancer. Ana last mammogram was a year ago and clear. Based on the physical findings Ana will undergo a diagnostic MRI.
