Communication Questions

Answer these two questions after reading the articles (attached in the file). Write one paragraph for each question.

1. Do the social identities of news media professionals (e.g., journalists, public relations practitioners, etc.) necessarily lend themselves to bias in news reporting? If not, why not? If so, to what extent should news media professionals be expected to disclose and acknowledge their social identities and the potential bias they may trigger?

2. Think about a social identity you hold (e.g., you identify as a man, you identify as a person with a disability, you identify as gender nonconforming, you identify as a religious minority, etc.). How are people in your ingroup portrayed in mass media? What are the implications—positive, negative or neutral—of these portrayals?
