Description
You have been contacted by the ABC School District to design a modular unit that can be divided in two
or more classrooms as needed. A plan view of the modular units is shown below. Each unit will have an
overhang on both sides of the longest building dimension. Columns can only be located along the main
perimeter. All main structural members (slab, beams, joists, columns and footings) must be of reinforced
concrete (f’c = 4000 psi). ACI 318-11 building code requirements must be satisfied. Assume that the units
are going to be build in San Antonio, Texas. The architect requires that between top of floor and bottom of
ceiling the clear distance should be 12 feet. The floor slab is going to be 6-inch thick. The bearing
capacity of the soil has been estimated to be 4500 psf. The water table is very deep. Only Gr.60 steel is
available. The roof of the modular unit is going to have solar panels covering 100% of the area (including
overhangs). Reinforced masonry walls will be used in the longitudinal direction.
